It's not Windows. And no explorer. So no, I don't think the PS3 can get virus by browsing web. (Not to my knowledge anyway) The PS3 hasn't even been hack yet, (I don't think) much less getting virus.

Again, only to my knowledge.

I think it can, but I wouldn't bet on it. I also wouldn't put it at risk either.

It can (as can any OS), but the virus would have to be built specifically for PS3, and I don't think that kind of thing exists. Most viruses out there are designed for Windows, which the PS3 is not using.

Don't give anyone ideas! I'd hate to have to buy a new ps3 because someone decided to message me a virus.

that's true..viruses and trojans are built to have specific targets..and most are designed for PC's, being the widely used format, with the intention of targeting information or destroying information..
and in saying so, the PS3 doesn't really have much information that would be beneficial to hackers/viruses.
also, the PS3's web browser does not allow you to be downloading stuff which is usually the medium of a virus

I suppose it's possible, but people program viruses to affect as many people as possible, so it's not likely one will be written for a PS3... You're probably safe, so feel free to go to as many porn sites as you wish.

Okay I know that malware (the general term for viruses, trojans etc for those who don't know) is specific to an operating system, Windows 7 malware can't affect OS X and vice versa.

However if an exploit is based on flash, does that mean anything that runs flash (like the PS3) is susceptible?

How about somebody here visit a website with a known flash exploit with their PS3 and report back on this thread?

I also think important info is on your PS3. If somebody could log in to your PSN account they can use your saved CC info to buy some games or rent movies

Hmm, how do I put this...

It has very recently come to my attention that the PS3 is astonishingly hack-proof, so no virus could attack the PS3 even if you copied on a USB drive and plugged it directly into the console. It'll even stand up to being torn apart and subjected to all sorts of fancy electronics directly attacking the memory.

I suppose it's possible a javascript or flash vulnerability could get at either your pictures, music, or videos, but everything else is heavily encrypted. Actually, I think those are encrypted too. And keep in mind, since Sony has a custom flash plugin, it'd be really hard to find an exploit.

In other words, the PS3 is safe from the Internet, and, well, pretty much everything. Granted, things could change, but at the moment, there's a lot of people in awe of the PS3 and Cell's secure design.

A virus would have to be specifically designed for the PS3 which has it's own file system one the hard drive and heavily encrypted memory.

Now since many multi-million dollar companies had (and in some cases are still having) problems programming for the PS3, why would someone spend the time to create a virus for it. It would have very little monetary gain, and even if you are trying to make a bot network (but why would you since PC's are so much easier) you would have to contend with the PSN, which is most likely (but I can't be sure) firewalled to death...

Now apparently the PS3 has recently been hacked, however this hack requires a hardware component to inject an instability. So not that helpful to would be virus makers. However I wouldn't be surprised if said 'hole' was not patch over in a future firmware update.

All in all I can see no point for a virus being made for the PS3, there is very little gain in doing so. 95% of virus are designed for monetary gain, with only a few made for purely malicious reasons. So I honestly would not worry about it.

It's a fine line to walk, since there's a lot of news stories out this week about a hack that ended up not going anywhere. Problem is, the stories were written before full details were known, so there's an assumption that the PS3 is vulnerable.

So I guess all I can say is, I've been following the details very closely, and there's no danger.

The kind of people who already write virii and trojans have been thinking about it already for a long time I'm sure.

well one thing of value they might want to steal off your ps3 is your psn login info. if you have made any purchases, then your credit card information is stored in your psn. they could use your psn to buy games and movies. but yea probably limited damage they could do. or they could just be malicious and damage your ps3, like if it was some former hddvd fanboy.

id say though the odds of someone developing a virus or trojan for ps3 is relatively low, unless it was state sponsored or something.
