Default The inherent problem with the barnes and noble criterion sale

They are not blu-ray!! For the most part. I know I am not alone on this forum with people that absolutely love criterion dvds. I could easily pick about 20 or so to buy from this deal, and its a killer deal for criterion collectors. But also, we live in a time when a blu-ray release may be just around the next few months for particular titles such as seven samauri, bicycle thieves, or many of their other beloved titles. Take for example salo, it came out by criterion in the rereleased form and was amazing, then the BFI release a blu-ray less then a month later that blew it away. Or Black Narcissus...and these other releases are giving criterion a run for their money on extras also.

So, who here would buy a criterion dvd release over another companies blu-ray relase....or how many of you are holding out on buying all the movies you would want from this sale, in hopes of a blu-ray release coming soon?

a) Criterion releases Blu-Rays.
b) An overwhelming majority of Criterion's films won't see a Blu-Ray release for many years, if ever at all, by Criterion or any other studio for that matter.
c) Yeeaahhhhh.......

I'm holding on some titles until they are re-released in the plastic case. I know I can get the case for $5 more, but next year most probably will be another sale also.

At least Criterion usually does a great job on its DVDs. They're not HD, but upgrading from a Criterion DVD (unless it was one of their early ones) to a Criterion Blu-ray isn't as big of a jump as mediocre DVD -> Blu-ray. Their DVDs are usually sourced from restored HD masters and look great upconverted. I upgraded my Criterion DVD of Pierrot le Fou to the Blu-ray, and while the Blu definitely looked better, it wasn't a HUGE difference because the DVD was already very good (probably as sharp as a DVD can look).
