Default G.I. Joe the Rise of a Nightmare!

I saw G.I Joe last night on blu-ray and when I tell you this was the worst movie depicting a cartoon I have ever seen. I wish they would have made another animated movie, instead of the real thing.

What were your thoughts of the movie?

while i haven't seen it yet, i did pick it up. not because i had any thoughts of the movie itself being great, maybe ok with some funny moments. i got it becasue it got good marks for PQ & AQ. most reviewers said it almost had nothing to do with the animated series of Joe. i'll be sure to post my feelings after I have seen the movie. i have and have no problem getting a crap movie if the PQ & AQ are rated high. I got a HT to watch good visuals and hear good sound. if i got it to watch only top shelf, well made movies as content goes, i might almost never use the damn thing!

I'll get back to ya after i watch it.

I haven't seen it yet. I fully expect it to be a "nightmare". I'm likely going to wait for this to come on HBO before I attempt to watch it.

I thought it was a fun movie.

I remember GI JOE as a kid (in the 60's) so I missed out on the cartoon version.

I thought it was worth the money.

I actually liked it. It was a fun movie and AQ/PQ was really good. I guess since so many people told me it was stupid, I went into it not expecting much. However, I was surprised.

Thumbs up

I loved the cartoon as a youth....wished the film was more along the lines of the cartoon series, but overall, it was a fun popcorn movie with great visuals and audio.

Like some others, I bought it for SQ and AQ. I thought Transformers was awesome even though the reviews were bad so I took my chances on G.I Joe. IMO, I wish I could get my money back. It's the worst movie that I own and my advice is to rent before buying.

I had poor expectations prior to watching it. I actually really enjoyed it. I have watched it twice so far. I grew up with the cartoon also. I have given up on the studios actually replicating our childhood favorites which I think helped me enjoy this more for the popcorn flick it is.

Default Dumbest movie of the year

I enjoy a good action movie as much as the next person. I can forgive Revenge of the Fallen because the action sequences are entertaining and the special effects are well produced. The problem with G.I. Joe is that not only is it incredibly stupid, but the action sequences aren't well staged and the special effects are atrocious. Supposedly Sommers himself admitted(according to the commentary) that they never fully rendered any of the aircraft in the film due to budgetary constraints.

While I can forgive plot holes in summer movies, these errors I could not ignore:

[Show spoiler]The Cobra aircraft in the opening action sequence maneuvers to extent that any passenger or pilot would be unconscious. Given modern military technology they could easily have made it a UAV instead and then have another aircraft drop their personel when the area had been cleared(in order to recover the nanobots)

[Show spoiler]The final sequence takes place at an underwater facility in the arctic with a surface entrance connected to the ice, which is presumably what enables the facility float. When they destroy the ice surface, presumably disconnecting the facility from it's bouyant counterbalance, not only does the facility itself not sink, but the ice sinks instead. Considering there are still Joe's inside the facility, it would have been much more compelling to have them racing through it trying to escape a sinking facility with crushing bulkheads and rushing water. Even an elementary schooler could have told them that Ice floats, but apparently the thousands of graphics artists and highly paid movie executives coudln't figure that out.

It was slaughtered by critics for reminding them of Transformers 2 within a dangerously short space of weeks (will the trauma never end? )

But probably the best review of GIJ is that it caught everything GOOD about the first TF1...When they can keep the cool of having seen the original cartoon, that, to coin a phrase, is half the battle.

In many respects, it is a disappointing adaptation. But as an over-the-top popcorn movie, I enjoyed it. I was expecting a disaster and it turned out to be a good time. Sure, I could nitpick and point out all the things it did wrong (they botched the Baroness to an embarrassing degree, for example), but why? At the very least, it successfully pulls off the feel of the old cartoon and its outlandish plots, even though the details are all wrong.

And even though the movie's billed-in-credits "Dr. Mindbender" is a different character mixed up with the iconic cartoon version depicted in the movie (to cover the plot SPOILER)...am I wrong, or did we get the original 80's cartoon voice dubbed over the masked actor?

(In the tradition of Peter Cullen repeating his Optimus Prime in TF1&2.)
