Arrow Box Office Weekend 8/5 - 8/7: Rise of the Apes

Rise of the Planets of the Apes debuts this weekend without competition for the #1 box office spot. Cowboys and Aliens opened weakly last week and should fade quickly. The Smurfs will probably repeat @ #2 for the weekend as young kids starve for movie entertainment. Transformers Dark of the Moon and Harry Potter 8 resume their battle for top domestic film of 2011. Thus, how much do you think Rise of the Planet of the Apes will make in its first weekend?

I voted $30-39.9M. "Some" people will still be going to Capt. America, Cowboys & Aliens, HP8, Smurfs. So, it should be in the mid $30M's.

I am thinking $42 million for the weekend, but I have little interest in watching it myself.

I really want to see 50+ for Apes. Burton's managed to open at 68m a decade ago.

I voted for the $40M bracket, I think it'll out do Cowboys & Aliens.

I'll probably be going on Friday morning, but I haven't decided for sure yet.

I was going to do a Tuesday double feature with C&A, but I decided to wait and rent that and see just Rise of the Apes with my free ticket.

It's (C&A) isn't bad, no matter what you're hearing (or believing), so a dbl-feature of those 2 could be fun Many of us here have watched & really Enjoyed C&A.

Free ticket?

I still want to see it, I've just lost interest in seeing it in the theater after going last week and the showing being canceled
And seeing as it did poorly, it's probably on our lesser quality rooms (smaller, not as new projectors, audio not as good and one screen has a line down the middle...) already

I have the AMC Stubs reward program and have $5 left in reward money and that's what a matinee ticket costs.

The little blue guys were on top again Tuesday:

Quote:
1. The Smurfs - $5,664,831

2. Cowboys & Aliens - $4,256,250

3. Captain America - $3,621,505

Transformers is doing big business in China:

Quote:
By a wide margin, Dark of the Moon's top territory is China with $124.2 million. That's followed by South Korea ($68 million), Russia ($44.6 million), the United Kingdom ($44.1 million) and Australia ($39.4 million).

Based on its current trajectory, it's safe to assume that Transformers: Dark of the Moon will surpass Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which finished with $1.066 billion in 2006. That will place it in the Top Five all-time behind Avatar, Titanic, Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Captain America may have crossed $200M worldwide sometime today.

Domestic: $124,481,534 65.4%
+ Foreign: $65,863,605 34.6%
= Worldwide: $190,345,139

Foreign totals are up to yesterday.

Though I won't be going to see RotPotA, I think it will be fairly successful. $50- $59.9 million is my guess (but on the lower side of that).

Funny thing is, when I read YOUR post, I then looked at the times for both & figured they'd be at the same time OR maybe 1 min. apart. But his was at 6:09, yours at 7:39

I win this battle
[Show spoiler]

Speaking of battles...the update on Titan and my Top Domestic battle:

Transformers: $339,690,805
Harry Potter: $325,139,206

Potter's Day&Day advantage is now $22,260,409.

Only down around $1M from last week I think.
Potter's slowing is approaching Transformers 3's level and the theater count for Transformers has been dropping like a rock the last two weeks and will presumably do so again this weekend

July sets new box office record:

Quote:
After taking a dip in June, the box office rebounded in July to nearly $1.4 billion. That set a new July gross record, beating the previous high of $1.32 million from July 2010 by close to six percent. July 2007 is the only other time a July has seen a gross of over $1.3 billion. July 2010 also previously held the record for highest-grossing month ever, a record which now belongs to July 2011.

In terms of estimated attendance, July 2011 was mid-pack with almost 175 million tickets sold, which was slightly more than last year but off from the recent high of nearly 190 million in July 2007.

July 2011 was more dependent on its top two movies than the norm for the month. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon combined accounted for over 42 percent of the gross, when the average of past July's top two movies was closer to a one-third share.

Boasting several records, including opening weekend gross, Deathly Hallows Part 2 racked up $318.5 million in the 17 days it played in July, which was the third highest-grossing July showing ever for a single movie after The Dark Knight and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. June holdover Dark of the Moon was second with $273.2 million in the full 31 days of July.

With ten days of July play, Captain America: The First Avenger ranked a distant third with $117.4 million. It was followed by Horrible Bosses ($96.3 million) and June holdover Cars 2 ($91.2 million). This was the first time since 2006 (and the last Cars) that an animated movie didn't at least make the Top Three for the month, while Horrible Bosses was the first time an R-rated comedy made the Top Five since Wedding Crashers in 2005.

Three new movies were presented in 3D, Deathly Hallows Part 2, Captain America and The Smurfs, but June holdover Transformers: Dark of the Moon still grossed the most in the format and had the highest 3D share (58 percent). Deathly Hallows Part 2 had the largest 3D release ever (over 3,100 locations), but saw only 43 percent of its business from 3D. Captain America's 3D was under 40 percent, while The Smurfs was at 48 percent (though from just one weekend). With more movies in 3D and more 3D showings, July 2011's 3D premium gross exceeded July 2010's by two thirds.

Overall, this summer's season-to-date total gross is now running four percent ahead of last year, but 2011's $6.32 billion January-July tally was down over five percent from 2010 through the same seven-month point. At an estimated 793 million, 2011's attendance through July rated the lowest since 1996.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes with a $40 million (expected) initial weekend. Much more impressive than Cowboys and Alies which only managed $36M with a production budget almost 2X as large.

Quote:
FRIDAY 8 PM, 2ND UPDATE: After a low-key midnight opening of $1.254 million in only 1,124 North American locations, Fox's prequel Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is jumping to an easy box office lead in 3,648 theaters. Hollywood initially thought the origins story with CGI animals and James Franco would follow the same trajectory as last weekend's Cowboys & Aliens which had about $800K in midnights and went on to a $36.4M Friday-Saturday-Sunday. But, remember, that pic got Smurf-ed at the box office. This Apes is faring better than Cowboys, looking around $15M Friday for a projected $40M weekend even without the hype and pedigree but at half the budget ($93M, or so Fox claims
