Default Anyone Else a Fan of Sony's "Standard" Mode?

I know most pros, calibrators and those "in the know" choose Sony's "Custom" or "Cinema" picture modes when adjusting their sets (or projectors), but I have found, on my particular KDS-50A2020 SXRD, that "Standard" gives a more pleasing "pop" with less "Advanced Settings" to adjust for those without the patience to do so; and so, I have calibrated my set with two different discs -- one being the DVE Blu-ray -- in Standard mode, making adjustments to almost all of the default settings to "tame" the look and get sharpness right...

I understand that Sony applies some edge enhancement and other tricks from the Custom mode's Advanced menu automatically in Standard, but on my particular SXRD set, there are no Advanced menus in Standard -- you must enter Custom to adjust for Gamma, Black Corrector, etc. However, I understand also that Standard on these SXRDs apply a much less amount of sharpness, edge enhancement, etc. as compared to what the sets do on VIVID.

I'm just wondering if anyone else with a Sony set (doesn't have to be a rear pro SXRD although this is the section of the forum for it) uses Standard mode and if it seems "okay" to do so -- at least not using Vivid.

On my TV, an SXRD as well, you can customer set all 3 modes to be whatever you want. The 3 modes are just a way to save 3 different viewing profiles of your own design.

Yes, I know they're all "presets" in that they represent different ways to begin a custom adjustment -- but I just wanted to know if anyone else with an SXRD or other Sony uses "Standard" mode as well...

I have an SXRD 60A2000. I was previously using tweaktv.com's suggested custom settings. However after going back and forth, comparing the 2 I decided to switch back to the standard setting. I just like it better. It has more visual "pop." Plus I honestly thought the custom settings made the image too dark. The only change I made in standard was I dialed down the sharpness setting. In standard it defaults at 50% but I brought it down to 25%. It elminated the mosquito noise.

Thank you, ijokr; I was going to reply to him reminding him that I did do two calibrations with two discs, but thank you...

These were my sentiments about Custom and Standard to a TEE, Steel -- I feel the same way about switching to Standard; the only change you made to Standard was Sharpness? Using my calibration discs, I made these changes:

Picture: 80
Iris: Auto 1
Brightness: 54
Color: 42
Hue: 0
Color Temp: Neutral
Sharpness: 28
Noise Reduction: Low

As I said, my feeling about Standard mode was that it allowed for less "daunting" tweaking than Custom with all the Advanced Settings you need to make -- and the White Balance was driving me crazy; it also adds a bit of "pop" as you said, which is what makes me believe that some Live Color or other picture enhancements are being made automatically in Standard.

Thank you for your thoughts, and looking forward to hearing back from you!

Hmmm, I'll try your settings and let you know what I think. Thanks!

Sorry -- I meant "52" for BRIGHTNESS, not "54"...

Also, I didn't really mean to suggest that you should use these settings for YOUR use; just sharing what I run on my set...

I have found that just copying someone else's settings doesn't really work because the sets are so different from one to another; that's why I didn't really care for Tweak's values or CNET's.

But I'd be interested to learn what you found with these values...

I have a sony kdfe 42a10 and kds 55a3000 rear projection units.
I have played with customer, cinema modes and I always go back to Standard. I make a few slight changes to some of the settings but basically it is as if I just took it out of the box. To me sony settings right out of the box are the best in the industry.

I have a KDS 50A2000 SXRD, and I had all three modes calibrated, each for a different purpose. With the SXRDs, you are not tied to a setting just because of the label it is given. They are each still fully configurable. Here is what we did:

Vivid Mode was calibrated for use in bright rooms, like mid-day viewing with high ambient light.

Standard Mode was calibrated for use in mid-to-low light room viewing

Custom Mode was calibrated for low/no light movie viewing.

Before having this done I just used Custom Mode calibrated with my DVE disc no matter what I was viewing. The new settings work very well, depending on the type of viewing and lighting conditions.

Definitely use Custom Mode for critical movie viewing. I would encourage you to try having the other modes calibrated for different lighting conditions though. It makes a big difference.
