Default What's with all the postponing of titles

What's with all the "indefinite postponements" on titles lately, given that BD+ is supposedly finished and ready to go? Another one today with "Flashdance".

Those words sound like some kind of punishment

Paramount is releasing Flashdance, so I doubt it has anything to do with BD+, especially since they postponed the HD-DVD as well. They also postponed Ghost, Officer & A Gentleman, etc. Hmmm...lots of catalog titles there.

My #1 guess is what I like the call the "greed of RIAA" aka "music rights".

Most likely, trying to renegotiate for the music rights on the movie for the new hi-def mediums might be delaying the discs from being released on schedule.

I really don't think it's BD+ anymore and more along the lines of "rights" and "residuals" now. Too much renegotiating. Too much paperwork. The price of going into a new medium which the current contract does not cover.

there are many reasons titles get postponed, if you put DVD titles under the same microscope you will see it happens on there just as often. There are many reasons. Some are

rights: like mentioned above, sometimes there are rights complications, when the studio announces X, some people that have some IP in the movie (like a song) jump in and want to make sure they will get their share (or stop something they don't want)

competition: sometimes studios look at what else is released, if a BIG blockbuster is coming out putting out a medium new release will cost you sales (if people only buy one movie a week and they will buy X then they might not buy Y that would be their second choice), a title that stays on the shelf long does not look good, not to mention that it does not look good when your title only sold 10% of the top one.

mastering/replication issues: the studio assumed that it could have it ready by date X but are not sure any more, because they did not put their order in time at the mastering lab or the replicator, other times the result they got is not good enough and decide to remaster it, sometimes it could be that some of the content (extras) is not ready on time

Or maybe waiting to see, who a clear cut winner in the format war will be, before wasting their time, releasing films, on a dud format, that ain't gonna sell.

Zodiac and Saturday Night Fever are some other older ones that were cancelled as well awhile ago.
