Default My 805 is dying.

Title says it. My Onkyo 805 is dying. It's been having random black screen flashes... then about a week ago it started making audible switching noises when the audio format changes. And just a few minutes ago it just randomly decided to shut it self off...

I need to start researching for it's replacement. Living in Alaska rules out any kind of shipping for repairs. Not sure if I want to go for another Onkyo or not... not the best experience so far. Any advice?

My 805 has always made a loud clicking sound when switching audio. I see you have a KDS-50A2020 and PS3. I have the 60A2000 (larger, grey vs. black) and a PS3 as well, and the screen flashing happens on occasion for me too. It's independent of the Onkyo. It happened before I got the 805 and it happens if I remove it and connect the PS3 straight into the TV.

Now for the shutting off. Two things: is the area around the Onkyo properly ventilated? If not, that can cause overheating and making it shut off. Secondly, check your wires and see if anything is reversed or crossed. My 805 kept shutting off on me during the opening of Quantum of Solace and it turns out that my right rear speaker wires were touching/crossed on each other and causing the receiver to shut down.

I had this exact problem when I had 2 cables reversed. Drove me crazy till I came here and someone mentioned it.

As the above poster said...I would remove all but the main speakers and TV and test. Then just start adding more pieces.

If the problem stays even with nothing plugged in...well then maybe it is time for a replacement search.

But an 805 is not that old...and I would hope that it would last much longer then a couple years.

My 805 has always made a clicking noise as well, which took some getting used coming from an Onkyo 506. Follow the great advice from the posts above and hopefully you'll get your problem worked out

How old is your 805? Warranty is 2 yrs. parts & labor. If you paid for it with a Visa credit card, they say that Visa will extend your warranty on things you buy with it. If something is really wrong with the 805, and manufacturer's warranty is out, Visa may be worth checking into.
Good luck!

The warranty isnt an option. I'd called about the random screen flashes and they wanted me to ship it to Colorado on my own dime for a problem they MIGHT be able to fix that MIGHT be covered under the warranty. Yea... ship a 65lb box from Alaska to Colorado isnt going to happen. That cost will equal 30% of the cost of a new reciever.

The screen flashes stop when I remove the 805 from my setup. I've had the unit about 18 months... maybe not even that long, and it was brand new when I bought it. And when I say loud pops in between formats... you can here them in different rooms of the house. And not just once, but EVERYTIME it switches, like 5 times each time a movie or game starts and is changing formats.

I'm sorry to hear about your issues. The 805 was a great model. I personally might try giving them a call one more time and speaking with a higher level supervisor to see if you can get them to ship it at their expense.

Call again, there must be a dealer closer than that for God's sakes. You're covered for two years under the Onkyo dealer support network, so your local Onkyo (closest) dealer should be shipping it to Onkyo USA for you.

So what should I buy next?!?!? That's the fun part.

Nothing too powerful, pushing 4 Rti8s and a Csi5. I hear good things about the new Yamaha.

You would think so, right? But keep in mind that it's not just a dealer, it's a certified technician. I have heard firsthand from one service center that there aren't many places that service Onkyo because the company yanks them around with delays in sending out parts and fulfilling orders and such. As a result, the customer gets mad at the company, etc etc. There's only one in my state and the next closest one to me is in Michigan, I think.

It's one of the reasons I'm hesitant to suggest Onkyo these days.

OP- when you say the screen flickers/goes black, are you talking about the Onkyo display or your actual HDTV? As far as the clicking, that actually sounds normal- switching to the DACs and so forth. Mine does that as well on some inputs, or when it switches to digital/etc.

The HDTV screen completely flashes black(audio doesnt cut out though). When the PS3 is plugged straight into the TV, it doesnt happen.

It never made clicking sounds prior to a week or so ago. I would have straight up returned it if it had been doing it from the beginning. Unacceptable. $700+ receiver cant be quiet? I mean sure, my $500 PS3 sounds like a freaking lawn mower... but clicking you can hear in other rooms? Pass.

Have you tried to upgrade the firmware for HDMI?

I'll buy it off you for $100 and pay the $65 UPS ground shipping charge if you want.

My PS3 is silent as all get out. (My 360 on the other hand....) The clicking that I hear isn't loud or persistent, and the LED screen changes the input type along with it, so it's expected. I honestly haven't heard it in awhile now that I think of it, but those are just the DACs kicking up.

It's too bad it's the HDTV- I know how to fix the LED. Have you tried swapping out cables when going straight from the PS3 to the TV just to make sure it's not a cable issue?

I'd be in somebody's face, either in person or over the phone. I'd remind them it's got a two year warranty, parts and labor, so it shouldn't cost me anything. Keep going up, to the next person in charge.............

I think you guys are missing the point, he wants an upgrade and has no intention of a fix.
