Default PS3 Netflix streaming question......

I tried to search, and came up with too many hits..... so here's the question(s)

1) How do I stream Netflix via Wifi with my old Fat PS3?

2) I read one post in one thread, that stated you needed to insert some sort of disc that Netflix provided to you, for each time you streamed a movie..... is this true? I would like to use my broken PS3 as a "Netflix-streamer" solely, since it isn't good for anything else at the moment....

If the broken one won't do it, I may be able to convince the wife that it's time to pick up that Oppo, and move the PS3 (the one that works) to the living/family room......

EDIT:

I haven't "Played around with it" to trouble-shoot, because the PS3 that doesn't work is in a box in a closet, and the one that works is too far away to get a good wifi signal from our router.

EDIT again..... damn.. google prevailed.... I ordered the "Streaming Disc" from Netflix, and should get it tomorrow or the next day..... EGG ON FACE

EDIT SOME MORE.......

Anyone have a link with a cheap power-cable that would work for my PS3? (so I can just move it from room to room.... I have extra HDMIs......)

Thanks!

I found one for $5.
Seems like the average price for a PS3 Power cord is around $9.
Gamestop and even Amazon has them.
Here's a Google link for all kinds of sellers and prices for the power cord.
Double check your system because this cord will only work on the older PS3 model and Not the slim.

O.K...... to update (not that anyone cares)

I finally updated my firmware to something acceptable to Netflix

I have slow crappy internet, so I was worried about speed, if it would work at all, etc........

Well.... I got it to play "Moe Live at the Fillmore" within about 30 seconds!!! The quality isn't quite DVD quality..... but it's certainly "good enough" for previewing potential buys, or watching films I know I will never buy...... holy cow I'm gonna watch WAAAAY too many movies now!!! I can't believe I didn't get this set up before!!!!!!

I doubt I'd be as accepting of the quality on the 106" screen (actually I know I wouldn't) but for late night movie viewing, T.V. series I can finally check out, etc.... this is GREAT!

I guess I don't have much of a point to this post other than to say, if you have Netflix, and player capable of streaming it, and you're not..... DO IT NOW!

Also.... my busted PS3 wouldn't play the netflix disc, so it's back in the closet

Sony claims a FW update next year will make the streaming part of the menus and eliminate the use of the disc.

When that happens your busted PS3 may be able to do it. Depending on how busted it is.

Just won't read any discs....... otherwise it "works" I guess.

EDIT:

I can stop and re-start at the same point, but how do I fast-forward/rewind with the PS3, or is it not possible?

EDIT: Comparing PQ right now with Shakes The Clown....... Not quite DVD, but it's not too bad.

I used the disc when I first got it and streamed a fairly funny movie that I never heard of before.

The rest of the people in my house (or should I say my family) often uses the netflix streaming for TV shows and movies that they want to watch but I don't want to buy (like the remake of the parent trap.)

This is great for tv shows, I just started to watch heros its in hd but looks ok. Very big fan of this feature. From the time you select a show to watch within 10 seconds it up and running. One night before I had netfliks I went through the playstation store to rent a movie and I found the great outdoors on there so I rented it, after 2 hours and 15mins I was able to watch the movie. Fail. If sony was smart they should have a monthly pass to watch tv/movies and make the streaming faster!!!!!!

so far as i know, and someone with first hand knowledge please speake up, streaming netflix on any supported system only yields stereo, no 5.1 this is true on xbox and standalone blu streaming players. however, xbox does offer the zune store that offers movies that are downloadable and supposedly play at 1080p and offer 5.1 surround sound.

I'm pretty sure the movies listed as "HD" will have DD 5.1 sound to go along with the better picture. The majority of them are 2 ch.

Beta, are you a Cincy guy? Brian Kelly is just chasing his lifelong dream to coach at ND But really, it sucks how it went down and that he's not going to be able to coach in the Sugar Bowl.

Yup.. You will get DD 5.1. I just had to set my AVR as my TV is going in Optical to the AVR.

All into my AVR via HDMI
PS3
BD Player
DVR
AVR out to TV via HDMI

TV to AVR Optical --- only way to get sound from the TV to AVR

i have friends near where i live who have standalone players that get netflix and the picture is in 1080 but the audio is in stereo. now you said your "pretty sure" does that mean you have streamed via the ps3 and seen DD 5.1 or not? I have the disc but have not gotten around to setting it up yet. but like i said, i used a couple of times the xbox with netflix and same story, i streamed a HD movie in 1080 and the audio was stereo. the only thing i have seen with my eyes is the xbox 360 zune store that you can download movies in HD 1080p and DD5.1

i will try the ps3 in the next day or so and get back to ya on my results.

man my head hurts trying to figure out what your doing! do you have speakers connected to your receiver? also, do you have cable tv or dish or directv? or are you getting OA signal and then sending it back to the receiver but again, for what if you don't have speakers, or do you have speakers, they are not listed in your signature!

help me understand, my nose is starting to bleed!
