Mainly by how large your room is. The bigger room, the more air you need to move, and the larger the sub you need. Also you could stay with a slightly smaller sub, such as a 12" instead of a 15", and get two of them. That is actually more recommended because of a more even bass distribution.

+1 - At Least a 12" for that size room if not 2 down the road. There's many threads on Subwoofers that you might want to browse thru to see what people have for their various sized rooms. One GREAT 10-12" might do the trick, but usually two work better in most cases from what I've read. I have a PA-120 (12") as my Main Sub to the right of my TV (pics below: PA-120 Sub Gallery) and a Polk PSW-10 as the 2nd (or Complimentary) Sub to the left of my couch under an end table. They "Sing" together wonderfully thanks to my SPL Meter (I have them dialed in at -83 db's, with my speakers set at -80 db's).

Get two sexy subwoofers from Bolzano Villetri (BV) of Italy. Even the name is sexier than most Americam-made subwoofers.

I agree with the 12" sub. For your size room, I wouldn't get anything any smaller. Later on you can pair it with another 12" for better dispersement. There are many really good 12" subs on the market depending on your price range.

The best thing to do is go to an audio dealership that has alot of models (preferably in listening rooms) and listen. I have found that some smaller models produce far better bass than larger ones. Our Definitive Supercube II, although very small, has better and deeper bass than larger and more expensive units in the showroom (and also our Infinity sub at home). Your ears are the best guide.
