Game Companies Going Green With New Cases
New 'Eco-Box' design offers 31 percent reduction in CO2 production emissions.
by Jim Reilly

November 30, 2009 -

Those who recently purchased some of this holiday's biggest titles for Xbox 360, such as Left 4 Dead 2 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, probably noticed something a little different about their game cases. The circular-style holes behind game discs and instruction manuals are not production errors. It's a new effort by companies to become more environmentally friendly by reducing excess packaging materials.

Hong Kong-based case manufacturer Viva Group recently rolled style the new style of casing dubbed the 'Eco-Box' which significantly reduces CO2 production emissions. The Eco-Box is already being used by movie studios for DVDs, but now it has begun appearing in the videogames industry.

I recently spoke with Kyle Sheppard, Manager of Business Development at Viva. He says this initiative to reduce packaging was actually driven by retailers and not game publishers.

"We have had success over the past two years converting the movie studios to the Eco-Box on a large scale and are now working with the various gaming platforms and game publishers on a similar transition for the games market," Sheppard told IGN. "Retailers are demanding that the entertainment industry and product manufacturers reduce or eliminate the large and wasteful packaging that has become the standard over the last twenty years.'

"Wal-Mart even introduced a packaging scorecard with certain criteria that must be met, including reducing all packaging by 5% by 2013," Sheppard added. "The Eco-Box already exceeds this goal for the entertainment industry."

Viva Group partnered with Microsoft back in 2005 to develop the original Xbox 360 cases the console saw at launch, which weighed in at a beefy 66 grams. The new cases have been toned down by 20 percent. "With the rise of resin prices and the push to become more "green" and less wasteful, we reduced the weight of this product to 57g in 2007 by strategically thinning parts of the box and reducing the amount of plastic used," Sheppard said. "We introduced the Eco-Box in 2008 which reduced the weight again to 47g."

Despite a more flimsy and less-protective look, Sheppard says the new packaging was fully tested by Microsoft prior to approval, adding there is "no real difference in quality or performance compared to the standard (non-Eco) package."

Sheppard also admitted that publishers are seeing "marginal savings" in overall production, such as lighter shipping costs, but that the CO2e savings is the main benefit in using Viva's new style of casing.

"We have had to make a significant investment in new production molds and the modification of existing ones in order to ramp-up capacity to support the various demand; it's not as simple as providing our customers with a 20 percent reduction in price since we are using 20 percent less plastic," Sheppard explained.

"We still have the same expenses relating to labor, electricity, sales and administration, so the material cost is a large part of the unit price but not the only consideration," he added. "With the rise in material prices over the past few of months, if anything, the Eco-Box has allowed publishers to maintain the price they were paying for boxes during the first half of this year."

"This really isn't a cost cutting move, at least not at this point."

Viva passed along some statistical data to show the reduction in CO2 emissions this new packaging provides:

* 2005/2006 Xbox 360 box: 0.249 lbs of CO2e
* 2007-current Xbox 360 box: 0.203 lbs of CO2e
* 2009 Xbox 360 ECO-box: 0.172 lbs of CO2e
* Difference: 0.077 less CO2e per box 2005-2009; 0.031 lbs of CO2e savings per box 2007-2009

"This is a 31% reduction in CO2e since product introduction in 2005 and 15.27% reduction in CO2e since 2007," Sheppard said. "A hypothetical new Xbox 360 release of 1 million units would have a 31,000 lbs reduction in CO2e by switching from the standard Xbox 360 box to the Xbox 360 Eco-Box."

But Xbox 360 titles won't be the only ones that use the Eco-Box case.

Sheppard confirmed Nintendo has recently approved the Eco-Box for Wii titles, and the company is also currently in talks with Sony about its PlayStation 3 cases as well.

I also can't see IGN at work, but I have to guess that this is just a retread of the tired "I hate recycle cases" thread.

I have never had a problem with these cases. I take good care of my media and don't really see why this should be a problem.

That said, I don't think it deserves a new thread.

No surprise there. It's cheaper for them to produce, and they can pretend they care about the environment for PR.

Really? I would think your fun would be greatly diminished because it came in the eco case. The game couldn't possibly be the same not coming in a standard case.
