Tempted by this once the price comes down. Shame that Manga haven't pushed the boat out with the packaging like the American Omega edition.

Will it be the same version as the US because the US is a no-no in terms of PQ. But considering the price which is the same as for the DVD collection, it is probably the same crappy version.

If your asking if it will be a true HD release then no it will be an upscale like the US release.

Thanks, as I already thought.

But why. This anime series is a big deal. Why is there no HD transfer? Even old crap movies with ratings below 5,0 on imdb get HD transfers.

Could just be it was created in that window when anime was only being created in SD, in the 90s a lot was done on film so they have easy enough to create true HD masters and later they would have been animated in HD from the start but its possible no HD elements exist for Death Note.

Its strange, with it being a mid-2000s production, I would have assumed that it was done in HD from the start. I was really looking forward to this, but guess I'll stick with my DVDs instead.

I bought the North American Omega Edition when it was at a good price on Amazon Canada. I haven't started rewatching the series yet, but I read the manga pilot which was a neat extra that came with that edition, and I watched like half of the first episode, to sample the picture quality.

Knowing the show was produced in SD and this was upscaled, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I thought it looked great, considering the limitations of the animation. Like for example, some of the background animation looks a little cheap, but that's only because the picture quality is so clean now, you're seeing it in more detail than it was maybe conceived with; but it's a very faithful representation. There might be a tiny bit of aliasing in certain types of shots, but it's marginal; I'm sure this looks much better than any DVD would have, and it's as definitive a version as I'm interested in.

One criticism I've heard of the blu-ray is a lack of English subtitles for Japanese text/signs when listening to the English dub, but since I stick to the original Japanese audio anyways that doesn't apply to me. And of course I can't say if this will be the same for the UK version (or if the PQ will be the same for that matter but they're both Viz media right so they'll probably be the same...).

Think the mid 2000s were the height of the SD animation trend, wasn't until nearer 2010 animating in HD became the norm.
