Warner Bros Lord of the Flies (Luca Guadagnino)

Quote:
“Call Me by Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino is in negotiations to direct Warner Bros.’ latest adaptation of William Golding’s classic novel “Lord of the Flies,” sources tell Variety.

Guadagnino and his producing partner Marco Morabito are also in negotiations to produce.

Warner Bros. has been trying to get the movie off the ground since 2017, when it reacquired the rights to the novel. The studio had previously held some rights to the book, as it was Warner Bros. that most recently adapted the novel with Henry Hook’s 1990 film.

The original novel follows a group of school boys stranded on a deserted island who descend into a savage social order. When the studio reacquired all the rights in 2017, there was an idea of making it a group of school girls who get stranded rather than boys. Insiders say that plan has been scrapped, with the plot to instead follow a group of school boys.

If deals close for all parties, Guadagnino and Known Universe plan to develop a story that stays true to the text but with a contemporary, ultra-kinetic feel. [SOURCE]

It could certainly be disturbing enough, going by his Suspiria remake.

I saw this adapted as a play in 2006 that was absolutely incredible. Whatever Guadagnino pulls, I hope it's half as affecting as that.

Hopefully!

I read the novel in college and was amazed by how haunting it was. As a literary ignoramus at the time, I had expected it to be some kind of joyous children's adventure. Being cynical of human nature, I regarded it as a disturbingly plausible and accurate piece of work. Any decent cinematic adaptation should not pull back any punches.

I saw a bit of a film adaptation of LOTF. It sure was intense.

Gonna likely see that in preparation for this.

Luca is an amazing director, love Suspiria.

I never liked the source material nor the 90s adaptation but Guadagino is talented enough to give me interest on this.

Oh great! He royally screwed up a remake of one of the greatest horror movies of all time with his thoroughly incompetent handling....and now he's probably going to screw up one of the few books I had to study at college that I really liked.

Maybe I should check out his other work.....but I loathed his Suspiria so much I'm hesitant....

well that's debatable, I thought Luca did a decent job reinterpreting a story to something new and not say a shot for shot remake like 'The Lion King' - "screwing up" is subjective but not a fact.

I was never able to get into the book or the older movie but I really liked his Suspiria remake so I might give this a chance.

If this is the traumatic cinema portion of Guadagnino's career ("Suspiria", "Bones and All", this), I'm 100% here for it.

.... I've tried to muster up to see the old 1963 film but I don't know if I can. For some reason, I feel like I wouldn't like it.
