Default FedEx just delivered my new Dell laptop to my neighbor...huh?

Weird, been tracking my new purchase through Dell's and FedEx's websites. It was delivered to my neighbor, who signed for it. Fortunately he's a good guy (though we don't know him well), so he naturally brought it over to my wife.

But doesn't that seem odd? I thought so, so I checked FedEx's website and, sure enough, they can deliver it to a neighbor and have that be considered an appropriate delivery.

Wow.

If your wife was busy and couldn't answer the door I guess it's better than leaving it outside. Plus the driver probably didn't want to have to come back again the next day.

Wife wasn't home.

What's better (generally speaking in this evil world) is: don't deliver it, come back the next day.

This happened to me about a year ago. Fedex.com said packaged was signed and delivered. I was like WTF? I searched in front of the house, the back yard, the mail box a million times, and inside the house.

Later that evening my door bell rang, and my neighbor across the street gave me my package.

It's great to have nice neighbors.

I just had this happen to me last week. I had to sign for my neighbors. Never really talked to them, but they were really really friendly, almost creepily so.

Well, mail fraud is a federal crime, so who'd want to steal something like that? Especially considering how easy it would be, at least from UPS or FedEx, to track it back to them?

Is delivering to neighbors a FedEx policy? It does not seem like a good idea to me.

Yes, it is. Didn't I put that in my original post?

Murder is a crime, too. Doesn't stop idiots from committing it.

I truly think they need to reconsider this policy/method because not everyone will be willing to fork over a package that might contain some expensive merchandise...I never had this happen...I occasionally get packages delivered by Fedex and buy stuff from Dell...Glad you guys have friendly and honest neighbors...

This would not qualify as Mail Fraud. Mail Fraud is when you use the US Postal System to gain money or valuables. Unless, the neighbor is at your house, claims to be you, signs your name, then they cannot be liable for Mail Fraud.

This would be more inline with Mail Theft. Although, I'm not sure ow liable your neighbor would be if FedEx or UPS delivered it to them, especially if you did not agree that the package could be delivered to a neighbor.

Some of my neighbors steal. I would rather wait even until I have to go to the local Fedex office. I love half my neighbors and could seriously do without the other half.

I assume with a computer it would have to be signed for. I believe it is the policy of FedEx and UPS to just leave an item at the door if a signature isn't required.

Looking back, it was in your post. Anyways, horrible policy. I trust my neighbors, but I definitely do not want them sighning for my mail.

I had speaker stands delivered from FeDex today. The box looked like it went through 'Nam. So of course the packet of screws and carpet spikes were missing. Oh well.

I called the company I got them from, and they told me to just keep this set, and they'll send me another for free, even though it seems like FedEx's fault. But who knows, maybe the company actually gave FedEx the box in that condition.

Well, as long as your neighbors are not like the ones in The Burbs, then it's all good.

That's crazy how they would do that. Never knew about it myself.

But I can see that as long as they have a signature, they can trace it back.
But this is also assuming that the neighbour is willing to accept the responsibility of your package and making sure you receive it in good condition.

I'm lucky enough I get all my deliveries sent to my work address so I can be there to receive all the time during business hours.

I had my Michael Jackson concert ticket shipped by Fed EX International and had no choice but to ship it to my billing address .... got a call from Fed Ex one day saying that they had attempted to deliver twice but I wasn't home both times so I had them re-route it to my work. I also live in an apartment, so maybe delivering to a neighbour is not an option.

If I was my neighbor, who is a world class screw up and likely thinks whatever he steals is owed to him by the anyway, I would just sign something like Joe Smoe and take it and claim I never received it.

If someone comes up to my house and drops something off ... I could see thinking it was just mine. I personally have taken packages that were mis-delivered to my neighbor and visa versa but ... stuff happens.

I've always have issues with FedEx delivering to my house so my solution is to have my packages shipped to my work. In my experience, deliveries to businesses is much more reliable. So far so good.

Oh yeah, that policy about neighbor's signing for you is just wrong IMO. I'd rather they attempt to deliver the next day or I pick it up at their office.
