Default Looking for some advice!

Hello everyone, let me start off by saying thank you for your help and consideration right off the bat! I have a 2007 40 gig model that the drive crapped out on about 3 months after I bought it in Dec 2007 was still under warranty, quick easy 2 weeks later back and bad ass! last week I started playing mw2 and borderlands for long , long ,long runs and about 2 days ago the ps3 started to freeze up. it did it a handful of times and now it is all it does if I try to watch a movie or play a game! the experience is random I could watch 1 hour or 3 minutes but it consistently happens at some point!

so.......Im bummed

I'm pretty sure its another drive failure since I can play divx, music and downloaded games so long story long!

do you think it is worth it for me to get it repaired through Sony and or does it make more sense to just buy a new slim?

my second question is if I buy a new slim can I use both systems still? what I mean is I have an PSN account that my 40 gig is obviously tied to, can I also sign in on the new slim and download all my purchases ? if this is possible I wont fix the old one and just use it in the bedroom for Pixel Junk Monsters and Fat Princes! lol

(on a side note, the 40 gig was kept in relatively open entertainment system with 4 built in 120 mm fans (2 suck,2 blow) and was dusted regularly!) everyone always seems to ask about these last points!

edit: If I get a new slim can I use the backup function and load in my backup file that has all my games saves and info on it or do i loose progress? thanks again for every ones help

Its not a hard drive failure that you are experiencing. It is a blu-ray laser failure.

yes you could use your psn id on a new slim if you wanted and redownload all your games. you can put your psn account on up to 5 ps3s.

In short, I had a similar problem and just bought a Slim (which is pretty awesome... love the design too). You can redownload all your purchases because you have access to all your old PSN logins.

My 40GB crapped at 14 months. I paid the $149 to get it fixed. However, fortune smiled upon me when I found someone willing to trade something for it. You see, I had been waiting for an excuse to buy a Slim since it came out. So, come Black Friday, I bought one. I also bought a 3 year extended warranty from Square Deals for $39 (and I never buy extended warranties).

For $149 you get a refurbished 40GB PS3. For $300 you get a new 120BG PS3 Slim. Since yours has failed twice already I don't think this one should take too much thought.

Your PSN account isn't married to any PS3 console in particular. When I bought my new PS3 I signed up with no issues. However, I don't know if you are allowed to access the same account on two separate PS3s at the same time. I also don't know if you're allowed to d/l purchases you've made on an old console onto your new one free of charge.

I am gonna go pick up a maxell blu cleaning disc and give it a whirl, for 7 bucks at a local video store I figure I have nothing to loose! if that doesn't work I probably will get a slim and keep the old one as a media center type dealy for the ole BR!

I've never used a laser cleaning disc. As I understand it the disc never touches the laser, so how can the laser be cleaned with a disc?

Marine Mike has a good thread on how to self repair your PS3 which if you feel up to it should save you a good bit of money.

It's a sticky thread riiiight here.

Have you checked to make sure it's not a thermal issue (in other words, vaccuum out the unit)?
