I just read this on Hi def digest. Thought everyone should know. Just in case.
HIGH-DEF DISC NEWS Receive High-Def Disc News via RSS PS3s Reportedly Not Playing Blu-ray Discs after Firmware Update Tue Sep 29, 2009 at 02:25 PM ET Tags: Sony (all tags) Forums and blogs across the internet are abuzz with reports that the newest PS3 update has broken the system, rendering the Blu-ray drive unusable. The long awaited 3.0 firmware update for the Playstation 3 integrated a wide variety of improvements, such as upgraded friends lists, trophy sharing, and a bit more personalization. Unfortunately, it also appears to have caused some problems with the Blu-ray drive. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Customers are reporting that both games and Blu-ray discs will play fine for around ten minutes and then just freeze up. The increasingly common story is echoed by countless posters on the Playstation blog such as JohnnyAstro who says that he “upgraded to 3.01 3 days ago, and in the middle of playing a game a day later, the game locked up, and that was it. The drive cannot recognize any disc now. Tried putting in games, Blu-ray movies and DVD’s. Nothing.” Reportedly, Sony customer service is stating that this is likely a coincidental hardware issue, and customers are being asked to pay $150 for repairs on their systems. While this issue does appear to be widespread, it definitely isn’t happening to every system. If you’re using your PS3 as a Blu-ray player though, it may be wise to avoid the update until this all gets straightened out. Source: Playstation Blog |

I upgraded to 3.01 when it first came out and have no issues at all playing any of my BDs. For the past couple of days I used my PS3 to watch Star Trek season 2 for 4 hours a day with no issues.
Perhaps only certain movies are being affected ![]() |

I agree that it's an intermittent problem. I've watched several BDs since I updated without any issue (note: knock on wood!). This includes Chronicles of Riddick and Wolverine, both of which have given other people problems.
On a similar note, didn't 3.0 give some people problems with playing Uncharted? I haven't played it in about 6 months, but I thought Sony specifically addressed that problem in a recent press release and said they are working on a fix for it. |

Watched Wolverine last night and didn't have a problem with play back. I did notice that I pressed NO on the BD-live feature and the disc stopped loading. Exited and played the disc again and pressed YES at the BD-Live menu and the disc loaded fine. Weird...

That is weird. Most posts I've read indicate it works better when people turned BD-Live off for Wolverine!

3.01, which was released shortly after 3.00, was supposed to correct the issues with Uncharted and BDs freezing.
The reported number of affected users wasn't widespread, but it was noticeable. If you are still on version 3.0 or lower, you should perform a system update to 3.01. |

i had a problem with it last night while watching sin city. I was watching with cine-explore on and it froze up on the scene where Miho shows up. I stopped playback and when i tried playing again the screen went black for a few seconds then came back with a message saying the disc could not be read, but after resetting the ps3 the movie started playing again.... scared the crap out of me haha

I have the ps3 slim and i have watched x-men origins twice....on my 3rd attempt it locks and freezes, i talked to Sony and they sent me out a box to be repaired at no charge to me....when the gentlemen asked what model my ps3 was i told him it was the slim. He told me i was under the 30 day mark to take it back and exchange it, i did went home to watch x-men origins, same thing happened locks up, i even bought a new movie same thing thinking it was maybe the disc, but still the same, so there is an issue here somewhere.
