Default Do sub dampeners help out with the neighbors?

Any experience of a dampener pad being effective by "quieting" up the bass for the neighbors next door? I've had a couple complaints (in a one story new duplex), and I thought about going for a cheap dampener pad.

I mean, it is the vibrations that they hear, right?

What location is your sub set up at? If it is in a corner, some corner bass traps is really what you should try. Even if it is not, some wall treatments is what you want to look into to. I am pretty sure they can simply "feel" and/or hear the bass from your sub....the vibrations they may sense too, but it is the sub's actual output that your neighbors can pick up on, so you need to set-up the walls/corners to absorb the sound from the sub.

My subwoofer isn't in a cornered location actually.

The person that can hear my sub is actually on the other end of the duplex unit. Her room is behind my back....down the hall...and on the other side of the wall in my office...which is quite a bit aways from where my TV room is.. Basically, my inner office wall is a good 30 feet away from my subwoofer TV room...and my office is really the only wall that we share.

Another words - my TV room doesn't share a wall with her...she's behind all that, down the hall, and on the other side of my office...

I take it no one has previous experience of dampeners quieting things down for neighbors, or perhaps for any other people inside of the same house? I'm quite surprised, speaking that there's lots of "zomg you need a dampener" talk here...

If you eliminate vibrations from the sub to the floor it will help quite things a bit, if you hardwood floors a rug will also help. I had the same problem when i lived in an apt. then i spiked my sub and placed it on a riser with foam under pad, no more complaints from there on. You can try the SubDude risers they should do the trick.

Thanks for the response.

My sub is actually 18 x 18 x 18 (roughly).

Would there be a better mat to support my beast?

I think they make them in different sizes check out there web site, also you can try to make one, i'm sure if you contact big daddy he will send you a link on the site from a previous form.

After looking at your HT pics you will definitely benefit from a riser and separation from the sub to the floor. If won't completely fix the problem but will help allot.

There's the 30 x 18 Auralex Great GRAMMA Speaker Isolation Riser, but I'd have to cut it (which would ruin the logo and such). I believe this riser costs about $99.

I figured that I would cut it, and use the other piece as my subwoofer in my computer room....

Still...$99...ouch. Trying to make sure there's not any more cheaper options before I snap at this...

Check the forms on the site i'm sure there is one dealing with this exact problem and how to build an isolation riser.

I put SubDudes under my subwoofers for my wife. She could hear the bass too well upstairs. They helped a lot.

Check this thread out. It explains how to make your own riser.

I just bought 2 15 by 15 auralex subwoofer risers for both of my supercube references and they made a huge difference the bass has a lot more impact without shaking and rattling everything. At first I used the styrofoam that came in the SCREF packing and that worked very well but the auralex worked even better, they look good to. I have them pictured in my gallery.

Default Update

Just wanted to post an update.

I purchased the 30 x 18 Riser (very nice unit), and it didn't necessarily help with the neighbors as I guess they were just hearing the actual bass from my monster sub, and not the vibration.

I will say though, I am still more than happy with my purchase because it took out all vibration on the floor around the sub, and it just seemed to clean up the low frequencies.

Default Subwoofer l Vibration Issues l Distortion is Really Bad!

Hello

1 l Quality Dampening Materials l Used directly under the subwoofer, entirely decoupling it from the floor, will mitigate transmitted vibrations more than anything else. This includes your room itself, which is audible, and of course, unwanted transmission throughout the entire building structure.

2 l SetUp l Proper setup of the parameters of bass of your system [subwoofer - loudspeakers - electronics] will be the second most beneficial aspect of avoiding difficulties with your neighbors, and is carried easily throughout a building structure.

These aspects are primarily the [ placement - crossover frequency - phase - gain ] of your subwoofer, which collectively are your options for quality bass, rather than highly distorted bass, which really annoys neighbors.

Essentially, the tighter the bass, meaning the least amount of distortion, the less that your neighbors will be impacted by your sound system; especially at loud sound levels. Eliminating distortion, improves your sound quality and significantly reduces what your neighbors hear, that is annoying them.

3 l System Sound Level l Of course, playing at reasonable levels is an unavoidable aspect of everything.

Thank You
