Default Half Blood Prince Sells 840k on First Day, Only 6% on Blu in the UK

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20091210/...c-ea4616c.html

Amazing first day sales for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince of 840,000 of which 53,000 were blu-ray's - amounting to just a 6.3% share of sales for blu-ray, let's see how it pans out for the rest of the week.

Not entirely surprising - this is most likely to be a kids christmas present and i'd wager it's a minority of kids that have a blu-ray player in their bed-rooms.

That doesn't sound right to me. Anyone who thinks Harry Potter is for little kids knows nothing of the series. Especially as it turns toward the finale, it becomes less and less kid-friendly, getting to the point where it's specifically for teens or young adults.

Anyway, this is Yahoo.uk reporting. I'd guess they're just talking about sales in the UK. It says the release went on sale monday, but it only just came out Tuesday in the US, and unless I'm mistaken, US is gonna account for most sales of this title, both overall and in Blu-ray, even in spite of the British production and cast.

Considering Up pulled 25%, probably largely in due to the included DVD, I would expect something at least similar, if not higher due to the fact that Harry Potter's visual styling leans toward an older demographic than the visual look of Pixar's Up.

A total of 840,000 copies of Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince flew off the shelves on its first day of release – 53,000 of which were in the Blu-ray format, according to sales figures.

The film is also the top selling movie download on iTunes.

To mark the release, special personal appearances from cast members took place at HMV in Oxford Street, central London, where they signed copies of the Blu-ray edition of the film and were greeted scores of fans.

British Harry Potter lovers who bought the Blu-ray edition will also be able to take part in the first ever worldwide Live Community Screening.

Yes, forgot to mention the UK part.

Even though the blu-ray percentage is only 6% apparently 53,000 units sold is also a record for a 'family' movie in the UK on Blu-Ray

Thank You these movies stopped being just for the kiddies since POA came out. Still don't know how this got a PG rating it's darker or as dark as POA which I thought deserved a PG-13.

WB probably interfered to keep them all PG so kids of all ages can go see them. Notice while there are adult elements in all the films, expletives are at a minimum and violence is not as graphic as it would be in say a PG-13 or Rated R movie.

So the % reflect UK sales. I was thinking that there was an error because 6% for Blu-ray would be way too low (North America).

It doesn't suprise me Amazon had the DVD version of Harry Potter for under $10 for well over a month. Even if the Blu does include the DVD version the cheapest it was is $15 so why pay an extra $5 for it on Blu ray if you don't plan on upgrading anytime soon or if you are just getting it for the kids as a stocking stuffer.

Because a lot of people have the mentality of "I'll have to rebuy everything eventually!" even if that's not right.

If I hadn't yet started buying Blu-rays and movies I wanted were available on BD with a DVD copy, that's what I'd be buying. However, I got on board BD before they started packaging them together like that. I'm a little annoyed because I had received Order of the Phoenix for Christmas on 2 disc DVD and it had a price sticker on it of like 25 bucks... I think a 15 dollar BD would have been much preferable to that, even if I could only watch the DVD copy in the meantime.

And we didn’t even as much have VCR in our bedrooms around early 1980’s
