Default Best of The Decade: Nominate Your Favorites

I’ve seen other sites and publications adding up “best of the decade” lists so how about we join them? This will just be the nomination process. We will do nominations until Christmas Eve at 12PM ET. On Christmas Day we will start voting for each category until New Years Day when the winners are announced.

For each category you may nominate AT LEAST FIVE and UP TO TEN selections. I will figure out a little later how we decide which get in, as it will depend on how popular this becomes. Remember these votes are reflecting from January 1, 2000 – December 24, 2009.

The categories are:
Best Motion Picture
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Musical Score
Best Animated Feature
Breakout Star [can be an actor, actress or director]
Best Blu-Ray/HD DVD/DVD Release

I feel those 8 categories are enough and will give us a good indication of the best from the decade.

the decade isn't over till the start of 2011. Just like the 21rst century didn't start till 2001. We start at 1, not 0.

This is from Wikapedia - A decade is a period of ten years. The word is derived (via French) from the Late Latin decadem, accusative of decas, from Greek decas, from deca. The other words for spans of years also come from Latin: lustrum (5 years), century (100 years), millennium (1000 years). The term usually refers to a period of ten years starting with 0 and ending in 9.

'nuff said - Lets Do it

Motion Picture (not in order)

1) The Lives of Others

2) Downfall

3) Hotel Rwanda

4) LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring

5) Amelie

6) In the Bedroom or Atonement

7) American Beauty (it was a 1999 film but won the Oscar in 2000)

8) Traffic

9) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

10) City of God

11) Up (if American Beauty doesn't count)

It's funny, only one of the above films won Best Picture, and half of the films are foreign.

Agreed. The people that argue that the decade goes from 1-0 instead of 0-9 are absolutely crazy.

Nice list! I find that usually the best films never win best picture haha

Breakout Star

1) Sam Mendes (director--American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road)

2) Javier Bardem (Before Night Falls, The Sea Inside, No Country for Old Men

3) Penelope Cruz (Volver, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Abre Los Ojos, Vanilla Sky, Elegy)

4) Todd Field (director--Little Children and In the Bedroom)

5) Joe Wright (director--Pride and Prejudice and Atonement)

As you can see, I think there are some great directors that came out in this decade that we will really have to watch for in the near future, especially considering the projects each are working on.

Thank you! I think it's 50/50 for me. Either the film that I think is the best of those nominated wins, or the film that I think is the best of the year is not nominated (i.e. Hotel Rwanda).

That's a very good list. I especially like the inclusion of The Lives of Others, which I think is by far the best picture of the decade, with Downfall being second. I also like that you included Changeling, which I think was the second best film of last year.

Love all of the lists Romulus, some great inclusions. I particularly like your choice of Ben Foster for breakout star. Why? Because although he doesn't have the depth of performances as some others right now, his performance in 3:10 to Yuma not only got robbed of an Oscar nom, but showed that he has serious talent. Emile Hirsch would also be a great inclusion to that list.

While they are all domestic films (despite Iwo Jima being in Japanese), I think you have a pretty nice list here.
