Canada Old Movies in Blu-ray Format

Can anyone tell me if there is any good reason to replace an old movie in my DVD collection to a Blu-ray version of the same movie? An example would be "The 7th. Voyage of Sinbad". In other words, would it make any significant difference, visually speaking, to have this old movie (1957) in its Blu-ray format since I already have it in regular DVD format?

I think it depends on you more then anything else. Personaly I would, but thats me. I'm trying to get all my old DVD'd switched over to the better Blu. I even keep a list to help me keep track. Some transfer's look great, while some don't. For example, I bought my wife last year Top Gun for Blu-ray, and WOW the Sounds and Picture Quality IMpressed me for an older movie, (sory if you don't think it's old I do) My wife was Blown away and she's not into it nearily as much as me. (of course she doens't complain when I do some upgrading to MY theater system, espescially the bass parts.) But basially I think it's really up to you. for me yes it's worth while. If you ask my 10 year old daughter she'll say yes, she wants the barbi movies on Blu and keeps asking me if they came out yet.

Thank you for your feedback. You seem to be a Stanley Kubrick fan. Do you have any idea if the Movie Barry Lyndon (my favourite Kubrick movie) is going to be released on Blu-ray any soon?

I am inclined to replace all my DVD collection in Blu-ray, eventually.

Some transfers have been poor, and the studios either have, or will re-release those films on Blu-ray again, so don't be too eager to replace "All" DVDs with the available Blu-ray, but "Most" is a pretty safe bet...... also, the size of the collection along with your disposable income will determine what double-dipping will occur!

I have repurchased (I don't consider it replacing, as I keep the DVD) about 80 films on Blu-ray thus far........ and every one of them has been worth it.

Default Many thanks!

Thank you all very much for your feedback and inputs on my original question. My DVD collection is relatively small, therefore, it will not make a big impact on my bank account to slowly replace (all) my movies from DVD format to Blu-ray. Needless to say, I have stopped buying DVD's all together and from now on any new movie I purchase is in Blu-ray format.

BTW, any thought at all on the movie "Bullitt" in Blu-ray format? Is it me, but I don't think it looks that great on Blu-ray... What do you guys think? Same thing for "Fatal Attraction" There seems to be some sharpness missing...what do you think?

Unfortunately there's nothing known about Barry Lyndon on Blu-ray yet, apart from that Warner might be working on a restoration.

Bullitt looks great for what it is. A 70's movie shot without a lot of artificial light and fast stock (more grain).

No, I have never seen it on DVD. Are you saying that it is a marked improvement on Blu-ray?

yup for both of them (sinbad and bullitt) definitely worth buying if you want a boost in PQ

As for the more general question,. Film has a lot more detail in it then was available with DVD and even BD. So anything that was shot on film can look better scanned and shown at higher resolution.

Check out "The Searchers". This film is from the 1950s but it looks incredible on blu-ray
