Question Is my Blu-Ray player likely shot?

As of today, my Blu-Ray player insists on showing everything in full screen, 4:3 - from the player menu to whatever is on the disc, even if that's not the correct ratio for what's playing.

I've tried resetting the unit and unplugging it. I checked for a firmware update. None of worked.

Also, instead of displaying the disc's title on the player's menu screen, there's a bunch of empty squares instead of letters.

I've had this full-screen issue with it before, but now it seems persistent. In the past, just turning it on/off helped.

It's a Sony BDP-S3200 that's about 4-5 years old.

I don't have this issue with other stuff connected to my TV, like the cable box.

Any ideas or is probably time to bite the bullet and replace it? I could consider a 4K player but don't have a 4K display yet and probably won't for 1-2 years. But it'd be nice to have when I do.

Have you tried your TV's aspect ratio settings? It sounds like that might be the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion but I did and those are fine. Widescreen TV content displays as it should. There's even a setting on the player itself for my TV aspect ratio, and that's also set at 16:9.

I just turned the player on again - it's back to taking up the whole screen but still get garbage characters where it's supposed to say what the disc is inside. The disc is practically brand new, and worked fine before. I doubt that's the problem.

Maybe I should feel lucky I got 4-5 years out of this unit.

If you Blu-ray player is going through different HDMI inputs on your TV each input can set to a different aspect ratio.

[Reset to Factory Default Settings] Resets the player settings to the factory default by selecting the group of settings. All the settings within the group will be reset.

I did that, yep. Even though it has stopped being full-screen all the time, I've lost some trust with this machine.

The Sony UBP-X700 looks tempting at $150 even though I don't have a 4K TV (yet).
