Default 1st real system

I'm looking at buying a home theater system for my room. I'm Looking to spend around 1k. Best buy has this deal and I was hoping for some input.

I don't know audio that well, is this a good deal?

I don't know much about those speakers.

How flexible is that 1k budget? I ask because you can get that type of reciever and a good sub online (like eD) for around 600-700. If you can spring a little more, you can have big speaker setup...maybe polks for speakers for around 500. I'm sure other members will recommend other companies and specific models in that price range.

Don't buy that. Pretty easy.

Check out some Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer, and Yamaha receivers for around $300-$400. You can get a good set of Polk bookshelf speakers and subwoofer for around $400-$500.

Thumbs up New System

I agree. You can do MUCH better for the same amount. My suggestion would be to get an Onkyo receiver, such as the TX-SR607. Then some really good speakers such as Polk. Check out http://www.accessories4less.com or http://www.amazon.com for some really great deals !!

If you are interested in Polks, one of the best sites to check out for both customer service and prices is NewEgg.

I just upgraded my system and went with the Onkyo TX-SR607 along with Energy C-300's for front left and right channels, an Energy C-C50 center channel and the Energy ESW-10.3 sub. Came to a total of about $1100....for about another $100 you can also get a pair of Energy C-50's for surrounds. Had this gear for about 3 months now and I couldn't be happier.

For around a $1000 I think this would be a nice starter setup.

Receiver- Onkyo 607: $500 @ http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...539&CatId=4586

Front L/R- Energy C 300 Towers @ 130 each. http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ENC300

Center- Polk CS1 @ $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-021-_-Product

Rear L/R- Polk Monitor 30 @ $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-094-_-Product

Subwoofer- Acoustic Audio HD-10 @ $150 with discount code on site http://www.thedeepdiscount.com/p-208...-watt-sub.aspx

Total comes to $1080, no tax or shipping charges on any of the above orders as well.

I did sacrifice timbre matching your front sound stage, some people think it's crucial that they are all matched, others ears are less discriminatory and don't even notice. Anyways good luck on your audio quest.

I think that majority of posters on this forum will try to keep you away from an HTIB and go with a little more advanced system (personally I would also).

For $1000 you can get a really nice "1st real system".

The list that Zedsdead came up with was still in your budget and has components that will be better than the yamaha/klipsch setup. Of course Zed didn't bother to list a BLU RAY PLAYER!!!!

For $1000 I would get this:

Onkyo 507 - Currently $320 at Amazon
Fluance SXHTB - $299 - http://www.fluance.com/fluan5speaks.html
SVS PB10SD - $449 - http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm

That will put you closer to $1200, but I think the extra $200 is worth it to get a much nicer sub.

I would consider the following:

Pioneer Elite VSX 21THX-currently $499 at 6th Ave. I like this better than the Onkyo models because it has a full set of pre-outs giving you the option of adding an amp later. You have to call to order from 6th Ave.

The same Fluance SXHTB speaker setup dewd listed above for $299.

ED A2-300 subwoofer for $350.

That's a total of $1148. Also note the receiver from 6th Ave and the eD subwoofer would ship for free and you won't be charged tax unless you're in a state where they have a physical store. The speaker package I'm not sure about. Also feel free to pick and choose from all the various components everyone here has suggested.

+1 on all the above, I would not get that HTiB because it does not even have HDMI! Pretty important IMO!

Very true. OP also remember you could get a receiver and subwoofer mentioned above and then get something like the Polk Monitor 60s and CS1 center from Newegg and start with a pretty nice 3.1 system and save a little more and add surrounds later. You would end up with a much nicer setup than the BB deal you were originally looking at.

Actually the receiver (RX-V465) is not that bad, it has 4 hdmi inputs. It's just a little over priced at bestbuy.com

all great suggestions, my 2 cents would be the Onkyo HT-RC160 at amazon for $330, 4 Infinity primus 142's $100 ea , a Infinity PC250 center $180 , Velodyne VX11 10" 150watt sub $200 at Audioholics. Ok went a little over budget, but great system to get started with.

Ok so i've opted out of the best buy deal i posted a few days ago.. I've done a little more research and I think i wanna go with the Onkyo 607 receiver since i found it for around $400. now what i'm still trying to decide is weather i should go with bookshelf or the bigger floor speakers. my space is pretty limited and i'm in an apartment. Whats the best speaker combo for the money? should I buy speakers individual or as a combo set?

thanks

I would try to find some floor speakers for the front L/R. Those are the speakers that are most important in a system. Bigger speakers usually have better specs (not all ways true).

Newegg.com has the Polk Monitor 60s for $109.99 each. That's a deal you really can't beat. Pair them with a CS1 center for $80 and a pair of Monitor 30s for $95. So spending only $395 for the "5" of your 5.1 leaves you some room to work with. You can get a decent sub for $200 or break your budget a bit and get a killer, ass-kicking setup. Better that than spending $1,000 on something you'll just want to upgrade in six months.

I'm happy with mine because I'm a cheapskate and got a pretty good deal on it. You should look for a 10" or 12" sub with some decent stats--watts yes, but also the low-end range. I share walls and a floor so I went with the 10". The eD sub is mentioned a lot because it's a good value at $350, but it may be more than you need.
