Default George Clooney - Overrated?

I have to wonder why studios continue to green light projects starring George Clooney. While you could claim that he is a good actor and attractive, Clooney's resume really stinks. The vast majority of his films in the last 10 years have been box office bombs. Such as:

The Men Who Star at Goats
Leatherheads
Michael Clayton
Syriana
Solaris

These films, while having artistic merits, are just snooze fests for the mainstream, and the ultimate goal of studios is to make money. I haven't enjoyed a Clooney film since the Ocean series.

How do you mean overrated? You have said that he is good looking, good actor and the roles he have chosen have artistic mertis he is overrated.

I personally think the problem lies with the viewing audience ( see Transformers 2/G.I. Joe and the like) LoL at us....

Don't forget his deradful role as Batman... Is it Clooney himself, or bad luck with the projects he involves himself with? I wonder what roles he's turned down that have enjoyed success (and whether conceivably he would have enjoyed the same success).

I liked Three Kings, and enjoyed Perfect Storm. Other than that... his best success was probably with ER.

You said "the vast majority" of his films have been bombs, but you only listed 5. He easily has 5 that have been box office gold (Ocean's 11, Ocean's 12, Ocean's 13, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Perfect Storm).

I used to hate him, until I saw him in Three Kings. Now I find him entertaining. I haven't seen any of the movies you listed above because they don't appeal to me.

To each his own.

Overrated in the sense that people will go to see a movie starring George Clooney. He is just not a bankable star.

Because of a few movies in 10 years that didn't smash box office records?

I challenge you to show me an actor that had 0 bombs in the 2000s.

As I said...its the movie going public that has a problem. Look at Transformers 2, G.I. Joe and the like. LoL at us with the attention spans of two year olds....

oceans eleven was an awesome flick, and as another member wrote, three kings and perfect storm were great too! I think he has picked some bad roles though, he needs a new agent!

He's underrated, like Brad Pitt. Just because they have good looks, their incredible acting skills are ignored.

Not just a few, almost ALL of the movies he released in the last 10 years. I could add these:

The Good German
Good Night and Good Luck
Intolerable Cruelty
Burn After Reading

All films that didn't do well at the box office.

Agreed! To me he always seems to be playing the same guy. He's very limited as an actor unlike say Depp, Norton or Penn who can completely transform themselves into different roles.

i cant stand his politics, but have to keep that separate when assessing him as an actor. it is hard though, since he's chosen to constantly put himself in the political light.

"O Brother Where Art Thou" was a great film w/ Clooney in it, release the blu please Disney (a $ off coupon would be nice too!) I think he started his acting career on "The Facts of Life" if I recall.

Oh come on, it's nowhere near "almost ALL" of his movies.

Maybe we define "doing well at the box office" differently.

I bet I could point out box office disasters for every actor in the 2000s. (Not that I have the time to do it, and I wouldn't expect anyone else does either).

Point being: maybe he took some creative leaps, maybe he made some bad decisions, maybe the movie-going public likes explosives and T&A better, I don't know.

I just don't think he's "overrated." Being in a lot of movies doesn't make you "overrated," does it?

Wouldn't he be "overrated" if his crappy movies did great at the box office?

I'm confused.

I think he is an amazing actor. Def not overrated! Just bc a movie doesn't do well in theaters doesn't make it a bad film.

I enjoyed Ocean's 11, Three Kings, From Dusk Till Dawn, Syriana, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, The Perfect Storm, and Michael Clayton as well.

I could watch O Brother, Where Art Thou? at any given moment.

One of my favorite actors of the past 2 decades, not overrated at all IMO.
