Again, I realize that there were other great albums released this year, but I think these two rank among the all-time great rock records...

Even though there are a few albums that I prefer over those 2 for 1972 (Purple's Machine Head, Thick As a Brick) I think that Bowie's album stands above for musical direction, novelty and all around excellence. I am not a huge Bowie fan but he was a precursor in so many ways. Bowie didn't adapt to the times, he formed it.
