Default Subwoofer Port Question

Generally, how much space should there be between the port and an object like a wall or entertainment center? I have the BIC V1020 which has a side port and was considering moving it. Was curious how much space. I seem to remember about at least 4-5 inches?

Any closer and it could begin to sound boomy and/or create standing waves.

Yeah, I understand, I just couldn't remember how much space was necessary. Thanks.

I know a lot of people who can't have them a foot from a wall, but you do the best you can do......we all have our room's limitations to work with.

So, 1 foot away from everything, say, a leather couch? Cause I know subs will sound a little different if they are close to hard material furniture..

Preferably yes, as bass waves will interact with everything in the room, for they are not directional nor do they discriminate only against the walls in your room. They are an equal opportunity offender.

I heard that if you put a bundle of straws into the port snuggly (facing into the port, allows air to travel through the straw) you can maybe get it closer to the wall. Don't quote me on this though, I've never tried and I have no idea if it would actually work. Supposedly it reduces port noise by breaking up the waves or something.

Well the port is on the right side and the right side is a good 2 - 2.5 feet away from anything, but the left side of the sub is about 4 inches from the wall. It seems to sound fine and that's about the only place I can sit it. The spikes help a lot with the reverberation. It's significantly better at not causing vibrations than my old Sony sub.

I never heard of this....I have no idea if it would work, but I assume it could on subs that have a port on the side. My port is at the top, so the straws would either shoot off like confettii (Happy New Year!!!) or they would just fall into the sub...

You need to pack them in so it's snug enough that they won't blow out. I'm not sure if it works on all ports, I saw a picture of it on a slot port though. I think the guy cut the straws too so they weren't so long. They were flush with the outside of the port.

But if your port is visible in any way, I doubt you'd want this as it's rather unsightly.

another rule of thumb is the quarter rule, whereas you place your subwoofer a quarters length of the room. for example, the rooms length is 16feet, you place your sub at 4 feet away from the wall, and so on.
