Default Does anyone use height channels?

Does anyone have first hand experience using height channels? I'm interested in feedback from those that have actually used them. What kind of material gets directed through the speakers? Have you noticed an improved experience after using them?

This is probably on my to do list...and can be done for about $100, with little to no trouble in the set up. Just can't quite pull the trigger yet.

Hey acritzer, I don't personally use them, but you might want to PM a member by the name of b.hulk gallery HERE. He's using them and could probably answer all of your questions.

I'm using height channels. Most of the time, they just make the mains sound like they're floor to ceiling, giving it a very full front soundstage. But when there is a non-directional ambient sound or a flyover, DPL-IIz Height does a pretty solid job of giving the sound some vertical placement. It's a nice addition.

So, you think it's worth it for about $100?
Also slightly concerned about placement. My idea was to simply place them atop the shelving sections of my entertainment center. This will probably have them high enough, but I've read that they shouldn't be place inside the L/R speakers. This placement would have them just barely inside the L/R.

I was in the same boat as you. When I got my new AVR that had DPL-IIz Height, I snagged a pair of Polk Monitor 30s from Newegg for $90 just to try height channels, figuring that even if I didn't like them, I would only be out $90. I ended up liking it enough to find some FXi30s to match my other Polks and move one pair of my RTi28s to height channel duty so I had a complete matched set (and then sold the Monitor 30s to a friend).

Lordoftherings posted the DSX placement diagram, which is a pretty fair guideline. You really want the height channels as high up as you can get them so that they're as close to 45 degrees elevation as possible. In my particular placement, my mains are at about 55 degrees from center because of how big my 100" screen is, so my height channels are placed directly above them per Dolby's height channel placement. So either place them above the mains or outside a bit and you should be good.

Seriously, what's $100 one way or the other in this hobby? Give it a try!

Ha, Okay, maybe it's not the $100 as much as it's the agitation it'll cause my wife. Have to plan for strategic purchasing for my electronics!

If you look at my gallery pics, you can see the entertainment shelves on the side. I was just going to set them on the outside edge. They're just a touch higher than the pics. Probably not 45 degrees, maybe just under that? Will have to check at home. Even though the placement wouldn't really line up with the guidelines, it would be extremely easy to do...so I might give it a try.

Well, I went ahead and ordered a pair of Monitor 30's from Newegg...$94 so I went for it. Too bad it's not likely to be here before Tuesday, when I get Iron Man 2 from Netflix.
My wife kind of gave in, assuming I would be happy with this upgrade for a while and stop complaining about not being able to do a projector. She just doesn't understand the HT bug, this will be good.......for now.......

I think you well like it. I have a similar setup with the front presence speakers on the top of my entertainment towers. I'm using some Infinity satellites I had on hand and they seem to be doing the job.

Ciao Italy - Hello Alex, La.!

Bringing a thread back to life instead of making a new thread. Due to BD's most excellent thread https://forum.blu-ray.com/audio-theo...nologies.htmlm , it has made me think even more.

I was thinking about trying Heights but after reading the thread concerning Wide/Heights I'm beginning to think I may try the wides instead. My room is only 7'8" and is 12' wide.

According to the Audyssey writeup the "wides" should be timbre matched with the three front speakers. I'm now thinking that I may use my four RS450's across the front along with my RS200 center and use the SVS SSS for sides and SBS for Rears....if needed.

Any thoughts?

I guess my main thoughts are that with such a low ceiling, heights may not be the best and I can actually have pretty much the whole front timbre matched...just not sure if there is room enough with 12'.

Just thinking.....

FWIW BD...excellent thread above... a lot of info.
