Default DTS-HD MA/DD TrueHD HDMI 1.2?

I have a Samsung BD-P1600 that I just got today and I have it hooked up to a Sony STR DG 820.

I have it connected through HDMI and the thing is my cables were supposed to be profile 1.2 yet I'm still seeing the Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master lights turn on, on the receiver. Can anyone explain how this is possible? The reason I'm asking is because I'm looking to get another player in the future and I was about to invest in buying HDMI 1.3 cables, however if these cables are working fine, then I would just settle for purchasing a cheaper cable.

Just because your cable wasn't certified for the 1.3 spec doesn't mean it won't work with it. If it's working that's great. Just keep using it. As I understand it pretty much any cable speced for 1.1 or newer will work with all features for the 1.3 spec. I don't know where you bought it, or where you were going to buy a new one, but if you do buy any more get them from monoprice.com. Their HDMI cables are just over $4 each and they're 1.3a catgegory 2 certified cables. Lots and lots of people on this forum are using them with no problems at all.

HDMI 1.2 and 1.3 apply to HDMI output port (chip) on the player and the input port (chip) on the receiver. It has nothing to do with cables. HDMI 1.2 is required for SACD and DSD bitsreaming and HDMI 1.3 becomes important when you are bitstreaming your audio from the BD player to the receiver for HD audio such as DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD. If you set the player to output audio in LPCM, any version of HDMI is adequate.

HDMI cables are certified according to Category 1 and Category 2 specifications. If a cable is not certified, it does not mean that it will not meet the Category 2 specifications. Chances are that even the cheapest HDMI cable will meet all your requirements.

Another specification for cables is CL2. That is for in-wall installations and meeting the fire and insurance regulations.

For additional information, read A Guide to Home Theater Audio Codecs and the FAQ page of HDMI.org.

Thanks for the informative posts guys.

I actually had no idea that it had nothing to do with the cables. I was really fooled by the marketing this time around.
