Default The Scorpion King 3: Rise of the Dead (2012)

Still no Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I haven't even seen the second film.

Quote:
As previously reported about three months ago, Universal has begun work on a third “Scorpion King” movie (originally thought to be titled “The Scorpion King 3: Rise of the Dead”, but it may just be called “The Scorpion King 3″ now, though that could change as the release date nears), with Victor Webster stepping in to play the lead, a role originally introduced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the “Mummy” franchise. The film has now officially begun production in Bangkok, Thailand, and will be released as part of Universal’s DVD Originals Line next year. Along with Webster, the cast includes Ron Perlman, Billy Zane, and wrestling guy Dave Bautista.

Quote:
As The Scorpion King 3 begins, Mathayus has lost his beloved queen and been driven from his former kingdom by a virulent plague. Now, an assassin for hire, Mathayus is dispatched by Horus, the King of Egypt, to protect his ally King Ramusan from imminent attack. In return for his services, he is promised Ramusan’s daughter Silda in marriage, as well as the legendary Eye of the Gods medallion, which imparts supernatural powers to its wearer. But to collect the reward, he will have to first rescue the princess, who is being held captive by Talus, the scheming brother of Horus. Mathayus agrees to the perilous mission, but the evil that lies in wait for him will challenge even his cunning and strength in a staggering test of courage unlike any he has faced before.
The cast includes Victor Webster (“Melrose Place,” Surrogates) as Mathayus; Ron Perlman (“Sons of Anarchy,” Hellboy 1 and 2) as Horus, the powerful King of Egypt; Billy Zane (“Samantha Who?,” Titanic) as the conniving King Talus; UFC star Kimbo Slice as Zulu Kondo; Bostin Christopher as Mathayus’ comrade-in-arms Olaf (Unbreakable); WWE champion Dave Bautista as Agromael; Selina Lo (28 Weeks Later) as Tsukai; Krystal Vee (Streetfighter: The Legend of Chin-Li) as the beautiful princess Silda and Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith) as the ill-fated King Ramusan.
Roel Reine, who recently directed the “Death Race” direct-to-DVD sequel, is directing “The Scorpion King 3″. Look for the DVD sometime in early 2012.

That's just the website I quoted. Universal released the second film on Blu-ray. Supposedly the second film was BAD.

Ron Perlman? I thought he would be a bit pricey these days considering Hellboy and Sons of Anarchy being big hits... must have a reasonable budget then..?

They should have kept The Rock for the trilogy.

Exactly. I mean, they kept Brendan Frasier for all three Mummy movies. Scorpion King was The Rock's first major role and look how they treated it. I looked up the budget for the first film and it cost $60 million to make and it made $90 mil alone in the US. Seriously, going the straight to video route is wrong for something like this. I mean, how does The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor go theatrical and yet they decide; "F**K THE SCORPION KING! STRAIGHT TO VIDEO HELL FOR YOU!"

No Rock, no movie for me although I'm glad to FINALLY know how Mathayus turned evil! About damn time considering that unexplained gap in The Scorpion King's timeline.

Enjoyed the first (though it's really just an "ok" movie, IMO), but the second missed the mark by a mile. Still, I'll give this third one a shot, even though I hate that it's not The Rock. The second one was a prequel about a young Mathayus, so it made sense to re-cast the role. But this one appears to be a sequel to the first, so it kind of sucks that a new actor will be used. (Not that I'd expect Dwayne Johnson to do a DTV film while his career is still kicking pretty well. But still....)

Yep and I remember back when they were promoting the first movie they said they were going to do a trilogy with The Rock. Back then he was still wrestling so I don't know if that affected them not following through or not.

Sadly DTV is very lucrative as it's cheap to make, and there are enough suckers to buy/rent a title that "seems" like a legitimate sequel of a pre-existing franchise. I wish they'd stop - but the money is too tempting.
