Its an original PS3 40gig machine. Have had it almost two years with no issues until recently. About a week ago while trying to play a movie "King Kong" it played for about 15minutes and then the picture froze. I started a thread here and people recommended I check the FW which I did. At the time it was 3.01. Its not running the most up to date version. I can go on line and all the other things the player does but it won't recognise a BD disc or even a DVD disc.
Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution? Initially it loaded the disc this morning (Casino Royal) and I got as far as the menu. Went through the menu fine. But when I hit play movie screen went blank. Checked the disc (clean). Tried another disc. Player said "No media loaded"??? Oh and I just set up wireless connection through my router. All working fine. |

Try installing the latest firmware upgrade, even PS3 needs a firmware upgrade to continue reading discs...
If that does not work, then turn off the system, then when it is off go to the back of the system and turn it off using the switch at the back, and then unplug it and leave it alone for a few minutes, by doing that it could reset the drivers. If this does not work then I don't know what else to do. |

Sounds like your laser is going bad. You can try to replace it yourself, theres a thread on how to do it here:

No have not been playing that game. I think you guys are right. Sounds like the laser. Is there a reason it would fail. It doesn't get heavy use? It's low to he ground in a glass display but no door so it's open to dust. Should inalso reconsider having it up higher?

Its unlikely though both your dvd laser and blu laser would fail at the same time, or at least thats what i would think. Both players i lost to this, failed on one format and a time later failed on the other as usage increased. Hence my sony lost the blu laser so as i watched more and more dvd's that failed as well. I suppose you could have just been unlucky.

How can you lose playback on one media and not the other though? Last edited by krazeyeyez; 01-08-2010 at 08:35 PM. |

It's a common problem with the 40gig ps3, mine did the same, had to ship it back to sony and they sent me a new one, its the drive failing...
One of my friend had the same issue, same thing, sony sent him a new one, you call their support line and they will send you a box to ship your ps3. |

My 40g has had this happen twice. First time Sony took the machine back and fixed it. But then it failed again about a year later and now its out of warrenty and they want $150 to fix it. Not gonna do that, probably just gonna try to keep bothering them till they fix it for free or i give up.
