Default "Star Trek" 2009 juttering problem

My friend has an LG LHB953 Blu-ray player/theater system and has never had a problem with DVD or Blu-ray playback until he began watching "Star Trek" 2009 today.

At random times about halfway through the movie, playback and audio will begin juttering, he says. Sometimes audio will cut out for a couple seconds, then come back in. Sometimes video playback will stop for a couple minutes, then resume.

All firmware is up-to-date. It's not happening on any other discs. He has the Target exclusive, if it matters any. We're going to swap discs on Tuesday so I can see if its the disc or, somehow, the player.

It doesn't seem like the player since everything else is fine and everything with his system is updated.

Are there any issues with the discs? Is there anything he can try that I haven't thought of?

Thanks!

I have the same problem with Star Trek on the Cheapy Magnavox players that Wally World had on sale this year. It plays perfectly on my PS3, but goes a little goofy on that player at times. But since I got the player for free, I can't complain really

Try the usuals. Clean the disc thoroughly as the finest scratch can result in playback issues. Double check the firmware just in case.

I'm not saying everything is related... but man people have issues with LG and Samsung players! Holy moly!

I'd just make sure the disc is clean, make absolutely sure the firmware is up to date... If the replacement does it, call LG. They might even tell you "we know there's an issue, we're working on a fix."

No problems noted playing the disc on a Panasonic BDP 80 and an Oppo BDP 83...

No problems on my Sony S360. I don't know why people buy anything other than Sony, Panny, or Oppo.

Thanks for all of the feedback, but it turns out it's not the player, it's the disc. Other discs work just fine in the unit.

Because a lot of casual people rely on third-party reviews, price and the such to fuel their decision on what to purchase. My friend wanted a home theater in a box, and the LG was the most attractive one. It's received good reviews across the board and was at his desired price.

Not every Blu-ray enthusiast visits sites like this, or is an audio/videophile. Hell, a lot of casual owners have never heard of Oppo.

So, those are some reasons why people buy other brands besides Sony, Panasonic and Oppo.

I understand this, but when buying an expensive electronics device, you should always do the proper amount of research. That's just being a smart consumer.

And what research would you recommend? That is, outside of the following:

- Word of mouth
- Reviews from magazines, Web sites, etc.
- Product familiarity

Just pretend you're not Kryptonic, Blu-ray Guru. Pretend you're David, a guy who just got his first HDTV (Sony) and decided to go Blu. You don't frequent niche sites like this, or AVS, or HighDef Forum. What you know of Blu-ray you've heard from friends, seen on TV and seen in stores. You know CNET is a good place to read technology reviews. You've been around LG gear before and like them.

Research is fine and all, and I agree a degree of research is necessary when looking to spend a good amount of money, but you make it sound like anyone who buys anything other than those three brands you mentioned are idiot consumers. That's a somewhat elitist mentality and narrow outlook on consumerism.

just because other discs play fine does not mean it still not the player. most players require periodic firmware updates, they may play a lot of discs fine, but there might be a new release or some older disc that implements a bluray feature that was left out by the player or not yet implemented.

as bluray is still fairly new its something we've learned to adapt to in order to enjoy the latest technology. at some point in the future, updates will be a lot fewer.

I understand this. One of my last posts says that the fault was with the disc, not the player.

Maybe you bought a bad disc. Star Trek plays fine on my PS3. If it was a widespread problem, it would be all over the news.

Your post didn't say how you'd proved this. Did it fail to play correctly on a Sony or Panasonic player? The Australian disc was fine on my BD35.

Failed to properly play on a BD drive in a computer (not sure of the brand), a PS3 Fat, and some Sony. Not sure of the exact Sony model number, but his friend bought it new on Black Friday. I'm betting it was the S360.

Don't be so touchy. It's nothing personal.

Those are the top three brands of players. Anyone who did any research would have found that out. Also, it doesn't take a audio/videophile to know that Sony, Panasonic, and Oppo are better than LG.

But hey, looks like it's a bum disc so no worries. I'm sure the player will be fine.

I have a Samsung blu-ray player(it was a Christmas gift). Star Trek plays fine in it. What's the difference between the regular version and the target exclusive?

I had an issue with the box set of the first 10 star trek movies playing on my S360 and the solution was to disconnect the HDMI cord, shut off the player, unplug it, reconnect the HDMI cord, replug in the player and turn it back on. It fixed the issue, there must have been a handshake issue between the TV and the player.
