Default If these were your only choices?

Which receiver would you choose?

Onkyo TXSR507
Sony STRDH700
Yamaha RXV565

Thanks

I would recommend you find something else with pre-outs, but of those three I would either buy the Onkyo or the Yamaha. Flip a coin to decide which one.

Whatever is the most important thing to you in a receiver......check out the specs and go with that one.......those 3 are very similiar IMO.

OK.......please give me the "for dummies" version. What the He^^ is a pre-out and why do I need it?

I currently have the Sony STRDH500 model which does not support HDMI audio nor does it process DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby TrueHD. Any of the 3 I listed are better than what I currently have!

A Pre-out is for adding an amp to the system . You cannot add an amp to your system if the receiver does not have Pre-outs .

For more power = better clarity for your speakers, as they would be running more efficiently from the amp. An amp's singular job is to provide power, a receiver has to be a tuner, processor and supply the power too, thus the receiver is not as efficient as an external amplifier in supplying the power.

If you're anything like me you're looking to buy your first receiver and think you'll never need an amp. This mindset cost me more money in the long run. When I upgraded my speakers to what I have now I wanted to add an amp, but couldn't because my first receiver didn't have pre-outs. I had to buy a new receiver. I still don't have an amp, but my current receiver is significantly more powerful than my first one was. My point in saying all this is it's a good idea for you to NOT limit your future options. In the case of the Yamaha for example, you only have to go up one model to get pre-outs. With the Onkyo you would have to go up two models.

I'm in Jacksonville too!

I have a new receiver ( a crappy one........but only a month old). I should have been asking all of these questions prior to buying my first one, and then I wouldn't have bought such a shitty one!

What did you buy, and where did you buy it? It might not be too late to return it.

And it's nice to see someone else from Jacksonville. MaCruz, LeAnn and ethical777 are here with us as well.

I bought a Sony STRDH500 from hhgregg a little over a month ago. I've been whining to hhgregg customer service for a few days now and I think they are going to let me return it (for exchange purposes only) since I spent a ton of money in there over the past couple months. So.......I think all they will do is give me credit which means I'd probably be better off buying a new AVR from them.

if those are the ones you have to choose from them I would go with the yamaha. OR save up and get the 765 in case later you do decide to get an amp.

Some speakers sound their best only when driven with large amounts of power-- the Polk Rti speakers are notorious for that.

Others require an amplifier that will drive a 4 or 2 ohm load-- (8 ohms is the standard). Magnepans and Martin Logans, for instance.

Receivers are usually only rated down to 6 ohms, and those that will drive 4 ohm loads often do so fairly poorly, with audible distortion.

The 665 has everything he would need, including pre-outs.

the 665 is rated at rms output power (1khz) 90 watts, 19 lbs

the 765 is rated at rms output power (20hz-20khz) 95 watts, 25 lbs

Which is going to be closer to spec.... I would not want the 665. I am looking to sell my sony and if I do I would like to buy the 765 or a Marantz if I can talk my local guy down from $600. I would bet that the op is not going to be buying an amp anytime soon, so therefore buy the better of the 2 receivers.

the 765 is the true replacement for the 663, might as well buy the 663 from amazon for $329

I got a call yesterday evening from hhgregg. They will take back the shitty Sony AVR I bought and give me full credit as long as I buy another AVR from them! Which one would you recommend?

Of the choices available at HHGregg I would get the Yamaha 665. Callas01 makes a very good case for the 765, but it's not listed on the HHGregg website. I don't know if their selection varies by store or not. If they happen to have the 765 at your local store I would consider it over the 665 depending on the price difference.

Thanks,

I'm going to go in to the store later on today and see if they stock any AVR's that aren't on their website. I know I can get a better deal/receiver through Newegg/Amazon, etc.......if I go that route I'll be stuck with this thing (that I shouldn't have bought in the first place ). I'll write down all the info on the AVR's I find in my price range and get back with you later today. I appreciate your time and advice!

Mike
