Default Sleeping Beauty on Blu-ray in 2008!!

Just read this snippet from a new Disney Consumer Products press release (click here to read). Here's a snippet from a paragraph about Disney Princess material...

Quote:
Coming to theaters this fall, Disney will release Enchanted, a classic princess fairytale with a modern day twist, starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey and Susan Sarandon. The entertainment will continue as Sleeping Beauty is planned for re-release on DVD in 2008 and will be available on Blue Ray [sic] for the first time. In 2009, the highly anticipated release of The Princess and the Frog will introduce Disney's newest princess.
This is also great news in another regard; Disney's Platinum Edition line (which SB is part of as the autumn 2008 release) includes many of Disney's most famous animated features. One could justifiably speculate that the PE releases from Sleeping Beauty onward would have coinciding Blu-ray and DVD editions. This is just an "educated guesstimate," but nevertheless...

I only just posted that I thought this would happen a few days ago. I'm over the moon about this. Sleeping Beauty is in my top 5 Disney animated classics, and it will look phenomenal on Blu Ray.

It also means we can look forward to Snow White, The Lion King and best of all...Beauty and the Beast, over the next few years.

I was thinking about this yesterday and wanted some opinions on it.

Can a Cartoon really look that much better in HD? I was running The Lion King through my PS3 for my daughter yesterday and thought that it looked pretty amazing. It is just lines and solid colors, so I higher pixel count can't really be beneficial, I wouldn't think. Now, Toy Story, Monsters Inc., and so on yeah...

I guess that I will have to wait and see. I wish they would release Beauty and the Beast though. Stepped on my daughters copy and she has never forgiven me.

That's pretty sweet. I am curious to see how far Disney and other animators can re-master such classics.

Is this the exclusive announcement? That was the last thing I would have suspected, but it is GREAT news. I have all the Disney animated films! I think this is even better than the Blockbuster news!

The Aladdin clip on the Pioneer BD demo disc looks absolutely amazing if you ask me.

Not a fan of Disney's "Animated Classics". Never been a fan of "Animation" per say - like Cinderella. However, I do like Toy Story, Monsters Inc. etc etc. They just don't feel/look the same as the older ones do.

Someone else posted on another forum about whether or not Hi Def could make a difference to animation, but of course it could.

Consider something like Beauty and the Beast, which suffered from some major compression artefacts on DVD because of the inclusion of the theatrical, special edition and work in progress versions. Given the room to breathe on a Blu Ray disc, that would be a marked improvement.

There may not be the details to pick out in some of the cel animation itself, but I'm sure it will breathe new life into the backgrounds, and Sleeping Beauty had some beautiful, lush background artwork. And many of the later movies such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King and Tarzan, blended CGI effects with 2D animation, which will surely benefit from a Hi Def presentation.

I'm sure it will also offer new possibilities in terms of interactive content, space for galleries and other bonus content. I would hope Disney would offer some exclusive Blu Ray content that isn't included on the standard edition.

I welcome the release of some classic Disney 2D animation on Blu Ray. I've been very disappointed with the way everyone has jumped on board the CGI animation bandwagon in recent years, including Disney. Disney had huge success with it's animated musicals, and it was disappointing to see them apparently come to an end. Fortunately, Disney are moving back towards traditional 2D, yet another good reason to start putting these films out onto Blu Ray.

It's bound to be a good seller, which can only be good news for the format. I've heard several Disney fans who don't already have Blu Ray say they will pick up the animated classics on Blu Ray even before they have a player, so they aren't left out in the cold like they were with releases of Fantasia, Snow White and Beauty and the Beast. You can't underestimate how popular these films are, and these are the sort of films which will win the format war.

It's the Autumn/Fall 2008 Platinum release.

101 Dalmatians is the March 2008 release, Sleeping Beauty follows in Oct/Nov 2008.

Every time the topic of animation in high resolution comes up, someone always asks this. Exactly the same. Who told everybody (not just deathscripture here) that since Animation was just lines it could be conveyed with low res and there would be little improvement?

Animation is art and the better reproduced the art, the more beautiful. What's the point of vector graphics? To be able to resize the objects without losing quality. Well, think of high resolution reproduction of animation cels (and background paintings) as a kind of the art being "upscaled" vector-like from 480 to 1080 to the end result you'll see in the screen

http://media.outnow.ch/Movies/Images...ovie.ws/12.jpg

Animation is shot in 35mm film from large artwork (like a page of a coffee table animation art book) so it'll look great on BD

Correction, it's a 35mm movie but with the image shot horizontally and in Technirama (an Anamorphic "VistaVision"), the negative area 24 x 36mm with a 1.5x anamorphic squeeze (1.5 x 1.5 = 2.25). Since it's a Disney Technicolor film, so you have an idea, if you have March of the Penguins BD, look at the Bugs Bunny Technicolor toon there. The Bugs Bunny is 15 x 21mm, Sleeping Beauty is 24 x 36mmm so the negative is 3 times larger!

I hope they show the correct 100% OAR image this time.

So 1.33 years away from release. Let's get through 2007 first!

It would be nice to see some good animation films and so far with most of the other releases Disney has done a pretty good job, so we will just have to wait and see.

Why are they re-releasing it on DVD? They released it a couple of years ago.
