Default Couple of question....

First--

Onkyo or Pioneer Elite receivers--which is better?....any recommendations other than these two brands?? I want a HDMI 1.3 capable unit, looking to spend anout $1000.

Second--

Is a HDMI 1.3 cable required for all these receivers, or will current generation HDMI cables work??

Thanks!!

look the best question you can ask a sales person to answer for you would be, I would the best reciever where i could hear a drop of the rain flawlessly? He/She will say DENON. they have the reputation, they live up to your expectation.

About Onyko and Pioneer I heard different things about it. some of my friends were happy and some weren't. I own a denon built to my George Lucas theatre system (cost me about 14000 dollars.) but you could just get the reciever i am satisfied with mine. just search and ask questions first, before you spend good money. (I see you are doing that and thats great.)

one more thing, mine the 1.3 HDMI was required for it. It came with the package when the guys were building my theatre room.

I think Marantz & Denon are FAMILY!
I've been using SONY Receivers for quite a while (since early 80's), but I think I'm about to switch to DENON definitely...Waiting for the next wave of 1.3 compliant Denon A/V to show up!

To be honest, I love Onkyo. I have had 3 receivers by them and they have all been amazing. Their THX logic is some of the best that I've heard and everyone in my house agrees. All four of us have onkyo receivers. As for the Pioneer Elite's, I have a really rich friend who's parents have a pioneer elite system and TV, and to be honest, in stores and at their house, the receivers don't seem to have a lot of depth. All of the sounds are very shallow, you know you're sitting in a room, and you know the room is small. I hope this helps. Some friends of mind have Denon receivers and they are pretty happy with 'em. Hope this helps.

cables are either "category 1" or "category 2"

most cables nowadays are cat.2 so you would be safe with most any cable...

personally, id go with any of these...
