Default My TV/BestBuy Experience

So i just wanted to vent here. I want to buy a new tv.. i have a 32 inch right now. I basically knew I wanted the samsung b750. went to best buy (ugh); and then it all began. I explained to the guy i wanted to see the 750 in action with a bluray player processing at 24p... well moron magnolia comes out and says that he could hook one up but 24p isn't what I think it is. (apparently i'm stupid...) He said that I would only see the effect of 24p on movies filmed on bluray format and that were made within the last 3 years... he was actually being super defensive and argumentative. I eventually told him forget and he was very wrong, and i just walked away...
just wanted to vent... bestbuy people are morons, and now I don't even wanna bother with the freakin tv. So... i'll ask the bluray.com community, how is the b750, good? Im a law student, so the 750's price is nice for me... thanks all

Oh just wanted to add... he also said that dvd's couldn't display in 24p, and most blu-rays can't either because they are just upconverted dvds..

i just understand how someone could work in the magnolia area of bestbuy and not understand something so simple as the natural cadence of film?? I was udner the assumption that it takes more to be a magnolia than just a best buy?

you have too much faith in people to expect someone who has certian job to know what that job needs, these days.

Although you had an awful experience, don't stereotype every single BB/MAG employee that way. There are probably more bad ones than good ones, but there are some extremely knowledgeable ones as well.

He is wrong about Blu-rays beeing upconverted dvds . But he is sort of right on the 24p only being available on Blu-ray discs. I don't know of any dvds or players that do 24p.

And from my experience most Bestbuy employees don't have a clue about anything. They might suggest a tv or model but only because they might make $ off the warranty or a model has a better markup then a different model ( or they have an instore contest on who sells the most of a certain brand). Magnolia department in my bestbuy is a complete joke.

Ouch. I don't even bother asking staff in a big box store anymore, most of the time they have done less research than you have. The only store I've been impressed with in terms of staff knowledge is Vanns.

No offence here but why would anyone care what they have to say at BB or Future Shop here in Canada? I get some of my stuff there, I research what I want, go buy it and tell the guy "look keep your trap shut, just give me what I want, pass my ATM card in the machine, give me my receit and everything will be just find"

Sorry to hear about the experience OP I would get the names of the employee(s) that you were dissatisfied with along with their employee numbers and contact someone in the district office and tell them of the way you were treated. This day in age they would like to know about an encounter such as this one.

Semi on topic. I had a completely opposite experience at my local BB/Magnolia store. I wanted to hear the DT Mythos One's. They didn't show that they were carried in that store but I stopped in on a Sunday morning and they had them hooked up. The employee wasn't happy with where they were and offered to unhook and move them to the room with all of the receivers (they had been in the room with the 3 AV setups) I told him flat out I would not be buying from there and I was just wanting to listen to them and would be picking them up from 6ave.com He said that was fine and still went through the hassle of moving them then finding me something to listen to that I was very familiar with (...And Justice for All) I spent about 1 hour there. When I was finished I thanked him for all of the help and he told me if I wanted to bring my own stuff in to listen to he would be more then happy to move them for me again.

Don't ask them, questions and don't ask them for help. Sounds rude but just tell them what to do. Use, "Can you please," to be polite, still a question formed as an order. "Hook this player to that TV, put in that Blu-ray and give me the remotes."

And try not to listen when they don't know a thing. Some people get really defensive, especially when they don't have a leg to stand on. Arguing will give you stres and you'll almost never change their mind.

Some are knowledgeable, some are not. I worked at Circuit City 10 or 11 years ago. We had to take quizzes every once in awhile about the products and go through some training, when we started or joined a new department. Guess BB doesn't do that.

I loved when customers new what they wanted, and could show off their research. It usually meant a sale.

i totally agree with everyone... but the thing i wanted was not to ask a question (i defintely already knew way more than him) was that i wanted to see the b750 hooked up to a bluray player... and he comes at me like I assaulted him. He literally started to lecture me and tell me I was completely wrong about everything; the thing about 24p on bluray was that yea he said that... but he said its only available on blu ray (not completely true because if you played a dvd on a progressive scan dvdplayer hooked up to a progressive scan tv you'd see the benefits) because the films were filmed on bluray format... Now, I could have laughed him off, but it was the unbelievable rude manner in which he approached me that pissed me off. freakin best buy..., i only wanna buy from there to use the rewards zone and get a free ps3 game... but considering i can get the tv on amazon w/free shippin for 1499... screw the ps3 game haha

Although I think that he did something really cool for you, I think that is a bunch of BS. If this guy is going to go through the hassle of setting up them up somewhere more desireable for you and giving you a good demo and you want to purchase them, then you need to reward him with the sale. Even if he is not on commission, it is still rewarding, and recognition from the managers is important. Its okay if you werent going to be buying at all, but your full intentions were to use him and his time to not purchase from him. There is a sense of pride of being a salesman (at least when I was a salesman). I hope you go back there and purchase something else from him in the future.

You'd see 480p/30 instead of 480i/30. Dvd adds 3:2 pulldown.

my bad... still tho, let's just call him completely wrong cos he was freakin annoying.... to give some people credit though, at the arundel mills best buy a few weeks ago, i asked a guy to see the panny g10 hooked up to a bluray player, he was more than willing, real cool guy and really tried, even though he wasn't completely knowledgable, he was more so than this columbia, md moron. it's so hard to make the final decision on a purchase when you can't mess with the thing yourself... i'm sure some people can drop 1700 just like that, but i'm a law student, that's big money haha

My intentions when I walked into that store were to get rid of my broken 360, not to demo speakers. I wandered into the Magnolia section and noticed the One's there. I told him I wasn't going to be buying before he even unhooked the first speaker, he was cool with that, I even told him the price I was getting them for and he understood fully why I was buying from 6ave, I did offer to buy them there if he could match the price, he laughed at that. You can go ahead and pay $1k/each for the speakers at BB if you'd like I will be happy with the price from 6ave.com They are not on commission so it makes no difference to him if I buy anything or not, I know I spent 5 years working at BB

Sometimes employees just want something different to do. I also spend more money in BB then I care to think about (bought a G10 and new receiver in the past month, I have also been shopping at BB since the week they opened here ~14 years ago), it's nice that the 2 local ones I shop at price match Amazon for Blu-rays I probably spend $100 week on just those.

There is a much better best buy further away from the one I go to, and they have more knowledgeable people there. It sucks because a year ago the people working in the one closer to me were cool and helpful. Now they are all A-holes and completely ignorant in product knowledge.

I'm the type of customer that doesn't mind paying "a little bit more" if i can get it the same day from a local place. But when I'm met with morons i take my business elsewhere.

I am the same way, it "scratches" the "itch" much better that way, lol. That's what prompted me to ask about the Amazon price matching
