Default Vietnam War Films!

Here's an odd coincidence!

On my Sky+ box, I record a ton of movies that are considered great that are found on late at night, but I've got a huge load of them that I haven't watched because I've been busy at school, well I've finished all my major exams now and have finished for the summer, so I looked though all the movies and I have a ton on there, they range from everything, but I notice I've got 3 movies with the same theme all handled very differently, they are all about the Vietnamese war, I put them in spoiler tags so you can have a guess at what they are...

[Show spoiler]Apocalypse Now (I don't think it's the Redux version)

[Show spoiler]Platoon

[Show spoiler]Full Metal Jacket

This is a really odd coincidence saying they have not been on the same channel and they are all from about 2 months ago.

So I've decided I'm gonna watch them all in one go, get though some of these movies.

Anyway, The point of this thread is to ask you what you think is the best Vietnam War film, is it one of the above or is it another one I missed, what makes that Vietnam war film better than the others.

[Show spoiler]So go on, tell me, I haven't got all day

Full Metal Jacket is probably the best war film ever. I liked Platoon, buy couldn't really get into Apoc Now. Might give it a second chance when it comes out on Blu.

Movies made about Vietnam were the best for several reasons. Hearing about the MIA's, torture, the way our country treated the soldiers when they came home. You also had in those movies some of the greatest actors ever - just look at the cast of the movies you listed. Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, R Lee Ermey (absolutely terrifying).

My favorite war film though, is The Deer Hunter. Walken, DeNiro, Cazale, Streep. Really captures how that war affected not only the soldiers that fought, but the people they left behind and how the war changed everyone.

I like all of those movies also Rescue Dawn, Tigerland, and the TV show Tour Of Duty are all really good. If i had to pick a best it would be Platoon.

That's tough. Full Metal Jacket is awesome, but most often people praise the first part in basic training, which really has nothing to do with Vietnam. The parts in 'Nam were not bad mind you, and I thought were really good and truthful.

Apocalypse Now has a lot going on, and much of it is fully entrenched in the characters experiences in the Vietnam War. Though
[Show spoiler]Brando's character probably could of gone nuts in any war.

I really need to see Deer Hunter and I have not seen Platoon in so long, I barely remember it.

Wow, tough to say which is the Best as I really love (for different reasons) PLATOON, DEER HUNTER, APOCALYPSE NOW, even BORN ON THE 4th OF JULY.

I'll never forget seeing PLATOON in the theater (which was Packed!), & when it ended, many of the older guys (Vets' I assume, but not sure) were in tears, being comforted by their wives/gf's, buddies.

You should try putting up a Poll with this thread maybe.

Apocalypse Now Redux, dude is the best Vietnam war movie I've ever seen, Full Metal Jacket comes as the second best, though I much prefer Kubrick to Coppola in general...

I would do, but I don't want it to get push aside and ignored in the poll mini-secton, and I wanted to see what other Vietnam war movie people bring up!

You like the redux version?I found that to have destroyed the movie. It completly obliterated the mood and flow of the TE of the movie.

But as they say:each to their own.

To me:FMJ is the best warmovie ever made. One could argue for Paths of glory, but I will give that the accolade best anti-war movie Apocalypse now is a movie set in a warsituation, but it is really a screen version of Heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad, and hence not a warmovie.

How does people here rate Boys in company C?Found it a somewhat of a B movie myself, but there are scenes in there which I really appreciate.

Platoon is directed by someone who served. Oliver Stone tried to capture the horror of what he witnessed as a youngster. I think he did.

Add Hamburger Hill to your list Foggy.

Apocalypse Now, We Were Soldiers and Casualties Of War are probably my favorites. And when I say Apocalypse Now, I mean the theatrical cut. Not sure how I feel about Redux version. Will have to watch it again.
