Default Kind of bummed out...

I have a 720p 50" plasma (at the time I got it, a FHD cost almost 40% more), and watch from a distance of about 12 ft. (almost 4 meter). I was already looking forward to watch blu-ray on my screen (I know it isn't the same as FHD), and I got this answer from an expert on another website:

"you'll be able to see somewhere between DVD and 720p picture quality, so blu-ray is of marginal benefit".

Talk about deflating spirits...
Anyone out there can cheer me up...?

Whoever told you that is uninformed.

I ran 720p/1080i on a Sony XBR projection TV until August of last year...awesome picture. You'll enjoy it very much.

I don't think the "expert" is much of an "expert". I have a 42" Panny 720p/1080i and the difference between a DVD and a Blu-ray is immense. I suggest playing a movie you own in both formats and seeing for yourself.

Glad because you should feel better .

Obviously this person knows nothing about Blu-ray . Your PQ & AQ on the Blu-ray is & will be better than that of A DVD .

When HD cable first came out it was in 720p and 1080i and was a huge improvement over standard tv you will get the same results but even better. Sounds like that guy needs his eyes checked

I have HD satellite channels and the PQ of some of the things I saw was pretty great, even spectacular at times, so I was very surprised to get such an answer...

There are alot of people out there that call themselves "experts". Some review movies, others blog about technology, and some give financial advice. In all reality, you are honestly better off getting your tech advice from places like here because you will get alot of honest opinions from people with real world experience with the products you are shopping for/have already purchased. Take what experts say with a grain of salt I say.
Back on topic, if you had 2 of the same tv that have side by side, set up the EXACT same way, and hooked up a dvd player and a blu ray and played the movies in sync with each other, the blu ray will look better 100/100 times, because there is no loss in quality. More pixels=more detail. Obviously the expert has not done so, or he/she would not of said what they said. Blu ray FTW!

Agreed ... guy is full of crap. Doesn't know what he is talking about ... at all.

Personally watched Blu-ray for over a year at 720p/1080i and it looks ALOT better than DVD on a similar sized display. Trust me, you will see a BIG difference.

Maybe this is true, maybe it's not but... I had a Best Buy employee (go figure ) tell me that "anything that was made before the year 2000 wasn't using the technology that could make a picture actually 1080p, so you probably should only buy new movies, otherwise you won't be seeing anything different from what you've already seen."

Now, maybe the whole "not actually 1080p" thing as far as filming goes is true, i have no idea and to be honest I couldn't care less. I've seen blus of films from many, many, many years ago and they look FANTASTIC. But to say they won't look any different from what I've already seen?! (DVD) is just crazy nonsense.

LOL, Best Buy needs to implement an actual training program.. Not even remotely close to being true.

well it might be true in the sense of consumer video displays. but film has had a significantly higher resolution than 1080p for years and years, which is why older films can look great, and tv shows that were shot on film.

Well, technically, this "expert" isn't completely wrong. I assume he's speaking from the fact that you are so far away from your display, but even if you are barely close enough to resolve 720p detail, it's worth upgrading to Blu-ray. I only have a 42" set in my bedroom and I know that when I'm laying in bed the difference between DVD and Blu-ray is minimal at about 9 feet.
