Thumbs up

An incredible film and one of the very best of the year, featuring some of the best cinematography of the year. Newcomers Eden Dambrine and Gustav De Waele give beautifully natural performances. Dambrine is a tour-de-fource and De Waele broke my heart. Émilie Dequenne is also great in her supporting turn. A shame she didn't get any awards attention.

I drove a couple hours to see this and am hoping it stays another week so I can go again with a couple other friends. Or if it would open closer that would be even better.

I didn't know this movie was going to go where it did. I only knew the basic storyline. It was an absolute gut-punch. I was in tears the majority of this film. Director Lukas Dhont is able to effectively establish a really beautiful friendship early on and in a relatively short period of time. As a viewer we are just as devastated by the loss of that friendship as if we had already watched an entire movie about these characters.

This film is going to stay with me for a while.

A

I'm dying to watch this movie but it's not playing anywhere near me and the "closest" location will stop playing it after Wednesday.

I was really glad I made the trip to see it. I also did Of An Age and Crouching Tiger since I'd never seen it. I generally don't like to drive that far for just one movie I want to see that won't open around me. So I was thrilled Close and Of An Age opened there.

I'm glad I signed up for A-List a few months ago because otherwise this would never have been on my radar. It was worth the trip into Boston to see. I'm not that far outside of the city, but there are 3 AMCs that are closer (Boston was the only one that was showing Close though).

I have mixed feelings about this. I felt like it was missing something and a little too vague at times. It was good but I think it had the potential to be great.

Anyway, for those who are itching to see it, it’s coming to A24’s screening room 2/28 and regular rent/buy streaming 3/3 https://screeningroom.a24films.com

Finally saw it today and it was incredibly heartrending. I already knew what was going to happen but that didn't make it any easier to watch. A truly remarkable movie that felt true to life and perfectly captured the perspective of a thirteen year-old coming to grips with how the world views him and his most tender relationship. It's my choice for Best Foreign Picture at the Oscars, where it probably would win if not for All Quiet on the Western Front.

[Show spoiler]I only wish there was a version where Remi didn't die and we could see what would happen to his and Leo's relationship. Would they drift apart forever or would they ultimately find their way back to each other? Sadly, we'll never know.

I loved it and I think the vagueness was on purpose. Director Lukas Dhont has made some remarks supporting that. If that part of it didn't work for you, that's cool but the only thing I didn't quite buy into was the timeframe in which the film took place. It felt a little artificial to set it from school year start to school year end with a
[Show spoiler]showdown of sorts between Leo and Remi's mother on that last day of school
. Otherwise, totally into it.

It's a strong movie. I like the way it depicts a close teen male friendship. It's very relatable. It could have been a bit longer to flesh out the relationship and characterization more. It felt abrupt once
[Show spoiler]the suicide
happened. Which I wasn't expecting. I also wouldn't have minded if the story played out a bit differently.
[Show spoiler]Something a little bit more nuanced and less tragic and final than a suicide.
Despite that, it's definitely a movie I want to rewatch as soon as possible, because it really stuck with me.

I drove a couple hours again to see it at a different theater that got it last weekend. Went with my friend and his girlfriend. They thought it was beautiful and I still found it to be an amazing film.

I hope to see the leads in many more movies.

There's a Blu-ray slated for a June 30th release from Pandora Film in Germany. Hopefully Lionsgate or A24 themselves release one in the U.S. sooner.
