Default Yamaha RX-V663(HTR-6160)+PS3

I have found most of the info about configuring these two together as far as PCM on the PS3. The part I have not found is what do I want to set the reciever too? I know it wont say "truehd" or etc, it does say "PCM" but I am having a hard time understanding that because of the PS3, how do I know what kind of output I am getting. Currently I am using Scene 1 "dvd viewing" and it only shows PCM but it only shows 2 speakers on the reciever

Oh also, Because the PS3 decodes and sends the signal as PCM...is the reciever treating the audio as whatever I had selected in the movie? IE if the movie is TrueHD is the PCM that is being output indeed TRUEhd?

If you are connecting your Ps3 to the AVR with an HDMI cable, set the audio on the PS3 to Linear PCM, then set the yamaha on AUTO mode, the OSD should light up "STRAIGHT" with the PCM light. You are getting lossless sound.

My preferred settings is to set the PS3 to HDMI Audio> Linear PCM and set the 663 to Surround Decode> PLII Movie (PLIIx Movie is for 7.1 speakers) for all my Blu-ray's and game listening.

I have the Yamaha HTR-6080 (RX-V861), which is the previous year's step up, and very similar, to your 663. I use that with the PS3 doing all decoding to PCM. I must admit that I have never used the Scene settings built into the receiver, and I would recommend you set everything manually. The 663 will remember everything you set, so you won't need to reload each time unless you change a setting.

PLIIx would be the appropriate setting for movie viewing. If you want to, you can reconfigure your Scene 1 setting to default to PLIIx Movie, because yours appears to be set at 2 ch stereo.

I don't use the scene settings on my V663 either. However, my understanding is that they are quite benign and allow one to customize the settings for any input source. Those could be useful if one likes the various DSP modes that are available. The scene names can be renamed too. However, like you, I find that the receiver's defaulting to the last used settings for a source to be quite adequate for my needs.

In addition to what king* suggested, if you have a 7.1 system, be sure to set the EXTD SUR. to PLIIxMovie, PLIIxMusic, or EX/ES to your liking instead of AUTO in the Extended surround settings under the Sound Menu. I found that the receiver doesn't always recognize the input signal flag sent to the receiver and thus it stays in 5.1 surround instead of 6.1/7.1. Doing this forces the V663 to use the setting you prefer for the back surrounds. And also be sure to set the INIT. CONFIG setting under the Option Menu to LAST (instead of the default AUTO) for the EXTD SUR. setting. Otherwise it will always default to AUTO for EXTD SUR and you'll need to manually switch it back in the Sound Menu from AUTO to one of the PLIIxMovie, PLIIxMusic, or EX/ES choices.

I second that. It took me a while to find that part in the receiver the first time and was quite frustrating.

I, on the other hand, do use the scene buttons. I renamed them and use them mainly for times when i am not around to set up the stuff, such as a roommate wanting to play xbox: I don't need to explain what input it is on or what sound would be best for it. I just say "push the button with the 3 on it" and the receiver jumps to the right settings.

And if you are only getting 2-channel sound, maybe 7-channel stereo (or enhancer) would be appropriate...tho besides music, older movies, or perhaps planet earth most blu's are usually at least 5.1

When you use a sur. decoder to derive 5.1 - 7.1 channels from a 2.0 to 5.1 input source, only the input channels and their corresponding speaker icons are displayed on the front panel. The V663 doesn't display the output channels. I can see how this can be confusing, but that doesn't imply that the other channels that the sur. decoder sends signals to aren't getting the signal. The V663 is an entry level AVR and doesn't have such advanced output display circuitry like more expensive receivers. Instead what you see displayed is the sur. decoder that you selected to derive the side/back surround channels. If you see that displayed, you are indeed utilitizing your surround speakers.

However, OTOH, if you play a Blu-ray movie having 7.1 surround sound, you will see 8 speaker icons displayed on the front panel. That's because the V663 knows that the input source has 8 channels.

If in doubt, you can do a little experiment. If you have 7.1 surround, play a movie with 5.1 audio and grab an SPL meter and set it to slow response and at least 80 db scale or higher depending on how loud the other channels are. Hold it directly in front of one of the back surround speakers that the receiver doesn't have displayed on the front display panel. You may have to wait for an action scene that makes use of the back surrounds. Once that has happened, you should see the SPL meter displaying something perhaps low SPL level at times and higher at other. Now, turn off the sur. decoder by setting the EXTD SUR. to OFF. Now, go back and put your SPL meter back on the same speaker where you had it before. The SPL meter shouldn't be displaying anything coming from that speaker although it may display the sound coming from the fronts, center, subwoofer, etc. if you don't have the meter set to display at a higher SPL. Anyway that little experiment should be convincing enough that your receiver is doing what it's supposed to doing although it may not so indicate such directly.
