Default Why star wars is so popular ?

While Star Wars (1977) and the Empire Strikes Back were innovative movies and a thrilling experience, I cannot explain how people still love star wars after Ewoks and the Gungans popped up and destroyed all the myth and transformed star wars into a big joke for 5 year old boys.

I have two theories:

1- GL has spread subliminal messages in Episode 1, making people defending this horrible movie, and buying everything coming from GL. ( Midiclorians ? Really ?)

2- GL is using some voodoo tricks for the same purpose.

any other theory ?

b/c a LOT of people grew up watching these movies and fell in love w/them.

and i don't get all the hate for Jedi...when i was 9 or 10, i thought that was the coolest movie.

i wanted a speeder bike so bad!!!

i was watching these movies non-stop from teh time i was 6 or 7 and consider the original trilogy 3 of my all time favorite movies.

but i guess i'm not cool b/c i don't see the need to bash lucas for what he's done to HIS movies.

ROTJ still stands very well, putting Ewoks apart. Why ? Because the story was consistent. A well balanced amount of action/humor. less CGI, and no midiclorians bs. ^^

Because even to this day, I can still vividly recall that opening "crawl" followed by an amazing two hours of truly remarkable Sci-Fi that would forever shape the mind of this (at the time) seven year old back in 1977.

There is a certain generation that has been embedded with images and emotions all associated with something that we will live with forever. For me, Star Wars molded and shaped my childhood . . . which translated into adulthood.

Back in 1977, I was plunged into geekdom FOREVER. It was a great time to be a kid . . . look at 1977 and beyond . . . it was simple(r) time . . . we didn't have computers or fancy Playstation/X-Box do-hickies . . . we had our imaginations.

I could go on for hours . . . but for a certain generation, it held quite an impact.

PS - I still think Han shot first

For many of us, it represented the first real fantasy/sci-fi film with a great story, great effects, and an epicness that was missing from the genre. No more tin spaceships, cheesey effects, and dorky sci-fi babble. Luke was a character we could all relate to at some level. Vader was scary. Its just good stuff. As much as I like Star Trek, it got away from the nerdiness of that and concentrated on being accessible to regular human beings instead of dorks and geeks.

The characters make it what it is. The story of Anakin Skywalkers redemption is a great one.

I understand that not everyone likes it but it shouldnt be hard to get why its so popular. The prequels have some issues - no argument there but they do fill in some of the blanks about how we got to EP4 which is what the fans wanted.

IMO, its the dragged out & milked Harry Potter franchise that has me wondering what the hell is so great about those. If anything, its Harry Potter that caters to 5 year olds. Oh well. In 30 years, HP will have been loooong forgotten, if not sooner. Star Wars will still be "in".

Couldn't have said it better myself. I still vividly recall that day in 1977 when my older sister took me and my little brother to see Star Wars for the first time. There hasn't been much since (movie-wise) that even comes close to that experience. Seeing LotR at the midnight premier was awesome, but still a distant second.

AND:
- Han shot first
- Vadar was silent

This is it exactly. Back in 1977, all cinema had to offer were movies like "The Godfather," "The French Connection," "The Omen," etc, with just a few major sci-fi/fantasy movies (most of which were still rather dramatic and bleak anyway). Most movies back then seemed really gritty and rough. "Star Wars" was the first of its kind; a major blockbuster with loads of action and comedy, a lot of upbeat adventure, and a deep highly-detailed universe to explore.

It may not seem like much today to some folks, especially since the market is currently saturated with movies that are high on action/style and low on substance. But back then, it broke the mold, and gave audiences of all ages something they really haven't seen in ages. And it made them happy.

I probably fall in this same generation; I grew up on "Star Wars" and the original movies have always been there to fuel my imagination (even the prequels have been predominant in my adulthood). Used to have a lot of the toys, the collectable card game, the video games, some of the books; it was always a blast to explore the "Star Wars" universe this way.

Also, I still think "RotJ is the best one.

don't you think that what made the PT less interesting is its lack of humor ?
No Han Solo-like character.

Misplaced humor might have been the biggest drag on "The Phantom Menace." For "AotC," and especially "RotS," the story called for things to be rather bleak and humorless. I never considered it a problem.

Han Solo was a great addition to the Rebel Alliance, because he was a rebel in spirit anyway. Such a character wasn't really necessary for the PT; if there was a Han Solo copycat, we'd all be complaining that all the characters in the PT are too much like the OT. Besides, between Obi-Wan, Yoda, Mace Windu, and Qui-Gon, there's enough badassery to go around.

That's the thing though the prequels were supposed to be more gritty due to the events that were occurring. There was a fair amount of very childish humor in the Phantom Menace and the first half of Attack of the Clones but from the arena battle in AOTC to the end of Revenge of the Sith it wasn't need as it was more action oriented and so it was scaled back. I have no problem admitting that I am a huge fan of AOTC since it was my first Star Wars theatrical experience and I found there to be a fair balance between the humor and seriousness in the tone of the film. Sure some of it was a little slow but it kept me entertained in my teenage years. The humor in the original series was pressed on a little bit too much but it due to the way the character of Han was.

I'm not really a big fan either. I think both Star Wars and Empire are amazing and they are masterpieces, but Return of the Jedi and the prequels just drag. I'll be daring enough to say they are boring. They do have a few good scenes, but overall, the first two are the only interesting ones.

To be honest:If I saw the OT today for the first time,it probably wouldn't blow me away.Infact I know it wouldn't.But at the age of 12 watching ANH on the bigscreen was mesmerizing.Loved all three when I first saw them in the theaters. But today, only ANH and ESB is watchable.Hate those furry bears. To me it feels like GL taking the proverbial piss, but maybe that's just me.For some reason I wanted those blasters more than the lightsabers when I was a kid

It's because these are great children's films first. Since 1977, there hasn't been such epic childrens movies which are interesting, have a huge rewatchable factor to kids, AND have awesome toys. If the Star Wars movies were released in the theaters every other year, they would still make massive amounts of money because kids are always turning 5 every year. Once you have kids, you'll understand. I hate those awful prequel video games, but kids love them. So that's why they are so popular. These movies are kept alive by kids. And most kids dont dislike Ewoks and Gungans - adults do.
