Default suggest some anime for me

i have very little exposure to anime. i have seen akira, spirited away and vampire hunter d, but not much else. i enjoyed them quite a bit, but i am looking for some more titles to get into.

i have always wanted to see ghost in the shell, is the 2.0 the one to get? is that the original movie, but "enhanced?" how about vexille? what are the differences between the version that is out now and the one coming in march?

any suggestions or insights would be appreciated.

thank you.

GITS 2.0 is a must-see, but don't see 2.0 for your first viewing. It changes way too much for first-time viewers, that it ends up being more for fans of the movie. However, GITS 2.0 does come with the original version as well (though I don't know the specs), so go with that blu-ray, but definitely watch the original.

My top recommendations:

Ghost in the Shell
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Princess Mononoke

I can use some suggestions as well. I own the following and interested in purchasing more anime/animation. I like science fiction(more like 2001, moon, sunshine rather than transformers, g.i. joe etc...) and art-house genres.

Akira
Vexille
Ghost in the Shell 2.0
Freedom
Dead Space Downfall
Final Fantasy The Sprits Within
Persepolis
Robotech The Shadow Chronicles

I will soon be purchasing Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence*, Appleseed Ex Machina, Seven Samurai**, Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, Resident Evil Degeneration*

What are your suggestions? should I avoid any of those above?

* I have never seen before
** I have seen Kurosawa's film and loved it.

If you love Anime sci-fi, check out Evangelion. It's among the best in Anime sci-fi, and considered by some to be the best ever. Also, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex which is the Ghost in the Shell series. Outlaw Star is another great one.

If you don't have the time for a new series, I suggest you check out Battle Angel, although a DVD copy is pretty hard to get a hold of.

Well, honestly, my favorite anime is still DVD-only right now.

GTO - A lighthearted comedy/drama about a rough-and-tumble gang member that really has a heart of gold that becomes a high school teacher. It's not normally the type of thing I'd get into, but this series just has something really special, I think. The characters are amazing... I've watched it countless times, and still whenever I pop it in it just makes me feel happy.

Berserk - Dark, violent, thought-provoking medieval/fantasy... monsters, swordplay, etc. One of the best storylines and some of the best character development ever. It's older (the series began in the 80's... and the manga is actually still running).. the animation isn't super great in some parts, but it's worth it. So good.

Gungrave is another one I really liked. It's cool... lots of gunplay, a twist of sci-fi, and one of the best endings ever.

And as was suggested, just about anything by Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli is going to be worth watching.

Vexille was okay... it was 'cool', but so cliche at this point. It's pretty much the same story as both Appleseed movies, and I liked those better. Just watch Appleseed instead, and if you want more of the same afterwards you can check out Vexille. In my opinion.

A lot of anime is tough for me to get into... I don't like a lot of the stuff that seems to be popular, but when I do find one I like, I tend to like it a lot.

Smile A few.

I have a few suggestions. I'd be happy to post more later, I love anime. Gundam Wing, Trigun, Wolf's Rain, Fullmetal Alchemist is a must, and Naruto. Another very popular horror anime is Hellsing, though I have never seen it.

Since I traditionally seem to be the only one in most anime threads aware that Anime comedy/fantasy even exists (and believe me, it's more addictive that way), don't forget:

- Azumanga Daioh
- Slayers
- Ranma 1/2
- The Castle of Cagliostro (the one Studio Ghibli that Disney doesn't own, so there)
- Sgt Frog (Sub only - Say in public that you like the Dub, and anime fans will pelt you in the street with rocks and broken bottles as either too clueless to live or "a Cartoon Network traitor" )
- Urusei Yatsura (Movies 1 & 2, "Only You" and "Beautiful Dreamer", and TV Vols. 8+
- Original Dirty Pair: Project Eden and OVA's
- Tenchi Universe (no, not the OAV series, unless you want an exercise in frustration)
- xxxHolic
- Princess Tutu (don't be put off by name/appearances, it has hidden coolness)

...Oh, and the streaming sites have started showing "Galaxy Express 999" again. Respect the Classics.

I thought Cagliostro was pre-Ghibli Miyazaki? Semantics, but I believe that's why Disney hasn't the rights.

Tekkonkinkreet is pretty good.

If you like role-playing kind of thing, "The Record of Lodoss War" might be a good watch for you.

I agree Princess Tutu might sound kind of girly but it has plenty of scenes that are beyond awesome that can also interest guys as well.

I also highly recommend When They Cry, Tsubasa, My-Hime, Scrapped Princess, Martian Successor Nadesico, Elfen Lied, Kanon, Shakugan no Shana, Full Metal Panic, Air, Tsukuyomi Moonphase, Fate/Stay Night, Witchblade, Ikki Tousen, Cowboy Bebop, Paniponi Dash, Kiddy Grade, Clannad, Tenjho Tenge, Tears to Tiara, Sakura Wars, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and I have plenty more where that came from but will just leave it at that.

These have been my personal favorites for a long time. Unfortunately, many of them are hard to find these days. GunBuster is only available on BD in a shortened movie version (which is still pretty good), and Bubblegum Crisis is only available on BD in Japan (sans English).

Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (movie)
Girl Revolution Utena (TV series) and the movie, Adolescence of Utena
Kimagure Orange Road (TV series) and the first movie, I Want to Return to That Day
Aim for the Top! GunBuster (OVA)
Bubblegum Crisis (OVA)
Vampire Princess Miyu (OVA)
Angel's Egg (movie)
Windaria (movie)
Cowboy Bebop (TV series)
Megazone 23 Part 1 (OVA)

I did recently start watching a new release from FUNimation called RIN ~Daughters of Mnemosyne~ that I would definitely recommend, as long as you're not adverse to some sex and violence. I wouldn't mind seeing that on BD (not announced yet).

I concur with just about all suggestions above. "Berserk" remains my top favorite, followed by "Ninja Scroll," "The Cowboy Bebop" (show and movie are great), "Fullmetal Alchemist," "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (and the remakes are not bad either), "Ghost in the Shell" (plus the shows), "Bleach," "Outlaw Star," and "Princess Mononoke." "Record of Lodoss War" and "Slayers" are not bad either (I actually love the "Slayers" movies).

I don't see these mentioned yet:

"The Animatrix," if you're a "Matrix" fan at all, these short stories are sweet! It was the thing that got me into anime in the first place.
"Area 88," a pretty intense OVA about fighter pilots at war. There is a remake too, but I haven't seen it yet.
"Battle Angel," it's short, and I believe the DVD is OOP, but it's awesome (and I believe James Cameron wants to remake it!)
"Black Lagoon," a fun action series. The main character is wicked!
"Castle in the Sky," another movie by Miyazaki, and probably my favorite. It's a very lovely and fun adventure film.
"Hellsing," vampire-hunting action! It's cool!
"Hellsing Ultimate," even better!
"Naussicaa," another movie by Miyazaki, more of a serious apocalyptic sci-fi story than fantasy, but it's awesome.
"Macross Plus," a very cool four-part sci-fi OVA. There is a whole series called "Macross," but I haven't seen it yet.
"Memories," a collection of shorts that are pretty interesting (I liked just one of them myself, but it's all worthwhile).
"Metropolis" is worthwhile seeing at least once. It's quite stylish and interesting.
"NeoTokyo," a collection of shorts, and they're all pretty awesome.
"Samurai Champloo," similar to "the Cowboy Bebop," only with samurai and hip-hop music. It's really fun.
"Steamboy," I know that sounds silly, but it's actually really good. It's got strong action and a strong story. It's from the maker of "Akira" too.
"Witchblade," based on the American comic, it's pretty hot.
"X," the series, an urban fantasy with lots of drama, cool fighting, and strong imagery. The movie's not bad either.

I enjoy these too, but am not sure if I'd reccomend them to anybody because they're kind-of weird and out there (though I guess if you like arthouse stuff, these might be appealing). Try renting them.

"Avenger," from the makers of "Noir," it's a pretty slow-going sci-fi anime. I think it's fairly cool, but it makes little sense.
"Elfen Lied," probably the second-bloodiest show I know of, with some messed-up parts. But it is a good story.
"Excel Saga," a very zany comedy that reminded me of the Looney Tunes when I first saw it. It's very crazy, but I find it hilarious.
"FLCL," a really wierd and zany sci-fi comedy. It has some smart ideas, but it's also got a huge WTF factor to it.
"Gantz," probably the bloodiest show I know of (and the one with the most cursing), and pretty strange. Lots of intense action and suspense though.
"RahXephon," something similar to "Evangelion." I love this show for its visuals and emotions, but it is rather muddled.

These are not bad either:

"Bubblegum Crisis" 2032 and 2040, both kinda fun.
"Burst Angel"
"Escaflowne," a wonderful fantasy series and movie.
"Karas"
"Project A-ko," a comedy about alien superpowered schoolgirls. What more could anybody ask for?
"Read or Die" (though it is rather absurd, and I don't know if I'd reccomend it to anybody who didn't like "Transformers")
"Speedgrapher," reminds me a little bit of "Eyes Wide Shut" but with more action!

I think that's all of them.

Akira and Ghost in the Shell should be mandatory viewings before watching any other anime. IMO

I too would like some suggestions. Below is my fledgling Blu-ray Anime collection:

Afro Samurai: Season 1
Afro Samurai: Resurrection
Akira
Animatrix, The
Batman: Gotham Knight
Blood: The Last Vampire
Freedom
Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (Japanese Boxset)
Jin-Roh
Paprika
Patlabor 1: The Movie (Japanese Boxset)
Patlabor 2: The Movie (Japanese Boxset)
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise
Tekkonkinkreet

From my limited exposure, it would appear I tend to gravitate more toward character-driven anime films that 'have a message'. I enjoy sci-fi trappings and action never hurts unless it overwhelms the plot. I'm not adverse to trying something new, but for some reason TV anime scares the hell out of me.
