I currently have a 4.0 system downstairs - old Boston Acoustics A100s in front, new Axiom QS4 surrounds. The room is a dedicated theatre, about 17' long by 12' wide by 8' high, pre-wired for 7.1.
I've had the A100s about 30 years now. Both woofers have been replaced and one tweeter. Cosmetically they are just awful. For a long time they hung high on the wall (10 feet up on a 13 foot wall) in a room that was heated with a woodstove. They will never be clean again. Grille cloth is torn at the edges, vinyl veneer scratched and peeling. Definitely not sellable. But, I recently moved a more powerful receiver in there and man those Bostons still sound good. As prerich says, ""wide front baffles, great bass extension, an excellent classic speaker". They were realistically rated down to about 40hz, clean highs, clear mid-range. Maybe not the best heavy metal speakers, but built for jazz or classical music. Now, I was planning to go to Axiom all round but reflecting on all this, I'm not sure I need to spend $700 or more on new fronts (I was thinking about M50s in this smallish room). I do want to anchor movie sound with a centre and I have no idea what might sound decent - compatible I guess. Suggestions? Comments? |
