Default Seven Pounds

A movie that blew me away when I saw it, wish I had seen it in theatres. Stand-out performances by Will Smith, Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson, hope Smith and this director collaborate again.

Never got around to seeing this one. Heard nothing but bad stuff about it so it kind of put me off.

I made a thread on this film a while back. I absolutely love this film. Great great performances in this one! And this is the 2nd time Will has worked with Gabriele Muccino. He also directed the Pursuit of Happyness which is another great film! Got Em!!

A bit melodramatic for me. I can see it's appeal though.

The story wasn't as compelling as it could have been. Still had great acting.

I agree. Probably my favorite movie of last year. Really just incredible all around. I've heard criticisms that it was unbelievable or as posted above, melodramatic. I don't really see that at all. I think Will Smith did an amazing job of capturing the emotions of a person in that situation and Rosario Dawson was just incredible. I've liked her in several other movies but she really proved herself as an actress in this film. Most of all, though, I think the melancholic tone of the film really comes through and the music is great . The cinematography is also amazing, like the love scene and when they walk the dog and sit underneath the tree, which also adds to the haunting beauty of the film as a whole. Really hope to see another collaboration with Smith and the director, too, as both this and Pursuit of Happyness were great, imo.

I never understood the criticism. Loved it. Not sure if it beats Pursuit of Happyness as Smith's best though.

Seven Pounds was definitely better than I thought it would be, but my god the Woody Harrelson's eye part freaks me out. That just looks so beyond unnatural..........

I believe this was the first Will Smith movie I didn't enjoy. They pulled out too many cliches(EDITED FOR SPOILERS) and none of the characters were developed well enough to care about. While I believe this was intentional, the end result for me was a melodramatic film that made virtually no impact on me after I left the theater. Pursuit of Happiness was excellent, this was the biggest letdown of 2008 considering the high hopes I had for it.

First off, how about a spoiler tag for those that haven't seen the movie?!?! And secondly, how is that cliche? Cliche means it's been done before many times or that it's predictable. I don't think this movie meant to surprise you with a twist ending like the sixth sense, I think the ending and actions throughout the movie serve to underline the themes of loss, grief, atonement and redemption. Also, melodramatic is like a rom-com where the guy comes to get the girl at the end of the movie. Melodramatic doesn't apply to things like death and sacrifice, since these are about as dramatic as possible. More importantly though, I think you are missing the point. His life post-accident is miserable and even after resolving to atone for his action, he was unhappy. Meeting her gave his life meaning again and as is so often the case, he finds the meaning just in time to have to lose it, which in this case is sacrificing love, which is his true redemption.

I think if the goal was to show the audience how miserable he was by making viewers feel miserably bored, then they accomplished their goal!

And perhaps cheesy is a better choice of words than cliche. I thought the ending was beyond cheesy. Just my opinion. Seems most here found it enjoyable and heart-warming.

And finally, there are many ways he could atone for his actions without doing what he did in the end. He could've saved many more lives through various actions if he didn't go the route he chose. A weak character.

How true! I thought this movie was significantly underrated. Will Smith gives a powerful performance as always and it makes for a beautiful testament to love and redemption. The melodramatic rom-coms that are continuously repeated are the definition of cliche, yet are usually widely received. It seems rare for a new release covering such issues to be poignant, well written and directed.
