Default Synapse acquires Vampire Circus, Twins of Evil, Hands of the Ripper

I can't believe it! After all these years, and then perhaps even on Blu!

Vampire Circus Blu-ray

Vampire Circus Blu-ray Review

Twins of Evil Blu-ray

From Fangoria: http://www.fangoria.com/index.php?op...ews&Itemid=167

Fans of Hammer Films’ 1970s outings will rejoice that DVD outfit Synapse Films has acquired the rights to four titles from the library of the classic British horror studio. Among them are three features that have never previously been available on optical disc in the U.S.

Synapse’s Don May Jr. gave us the scoop that they’ve picked up Robert Young’s VAMPIRE CIRCUS, John Hough’s TWINS OF EVIL and Peter Sasdy’s HANDS OF THE RIPPER, along with the classic 13-episode TV series HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR. “We have new high-definition transfers of all three features,” May tells Fango. “Supplement producer Daniel Griffith is working with us on extras, including—so far—interviews with filmmaker and Hammer fan Joe Dante and FLESH AND BLOOD: THE HAMMER HERITAGE OF HORROR writer/director Ted Newsom. Other possible interviews and extras are in the works, including theatrical trailers and TV spots. It’s very possible we will be putting out the three features on Blu-ray as well. If we do, we’ll announce both the DVD and Blu-ray releases at the same time. All 13 episodes of HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR will be released in a DVD boxed set. The plan is to have these available in third quarter 2010.” Keep your eyes here for details as they become available.

I've been looking forward to Hammer Horror on Blu Ray since I got the player. The prospect of not only that, but thus far unreleased Hammer is very exciting.

I really hope the blu ray pans out.

I have been trying to snatch up Hammer Horror titles left and right lately... so this is good news. Esp if they are released on BLU. I will buy them all.

Has Synapse released any BLUs at all yet ?

This is the best news I've heard all year.

I'll be happy to replace my current Spanish import of Twins of Evil with a legit US release, let alone a high-def release.

Hopefully Synapse will eventually pick up the rights to The Mummy (1959), Phantom of the Opera (1962), Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, The Vampire Lovers, Blood from the Mummy's Tomb, the early Dracula movies (up until Scars of Dracula), Curse of Frankenstein and Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed.

There was mention in 2008 by Don May Jr of Synapse Films of releasing a Maniac Cop blu-ray (but I can't find the product itself anywhere, even OOP). It seems they were prepping it but am not sure they actually released it (perhaps they lost the rights at the last minute).

He evidently did collaborate on Dark Sky Films' blu-ray release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. So I'd expect a high-def treatment similar to that film's.

I SO hope these titles do get the high def treatment. The current blu-ray catalogue is sadly deficient of classic and cult horror films.

This is excellent news! I really do hope that this is first batch of many Hammer (and, fingers crossed, Amicus too) releases.

My friend's dad is in one of the Hammer House of Horror episodes, which is an added bonus!

Very cool. I just hope Don May Jr. get's off his butt and does get into the blu-ray game. His company is one of the last who needs to get the blu-rays out. I have not bought anything from Synapse in years because they where not released on blu-ray. If he releases blu-rays his sales will go up big time.

About time. I'm sick of watching my bootleg copy of Vampire Circus.

well, this is a start for classic horror film fans! I will buy all 3 titles on blu
without question (even a nicer bonus that these were never on U.S. dvd anyway so it's not even a double dip!)

I sure hope this happens.... and then continues with more

Looks like I should have sold my OOP U.K. DVDs of Vampire Circus and Twins of Evil when I had the chance. Oh, well. Looking forward to Vampire Circus, hopefully in HD.

I've got just about every Hammer film released on DVD in North America. I can't wait to get my hands on these three. I've never seen Hands of the Ripper.

Remember, the key word is "possible" not "will be" or "we are" ... I hate to diss Synapse since they do excellant work on DVD, but they have been talking about "possibly" releasing Blu-Ray's for years now and as yet have not released ONE title.

That's why I think we should kindly remind them of our interest. Everywhere I have seen this posted there have been several calls for the Blu's to be released. Don May Jr. posts over at AV Maniacs, so he can at least see some vocal support for it. With Severin releasing Horror Express and The House that Dripped Blood, I think Synapse will finally have to jump on the game. Even Shout! has a few out now (though nothing on the new Gamera's!) I did leave a note on Severin's webpage to express utter joy at them releasing Blu's.

If they are going to release them on Blu-ray, they need to be done by Halloween. It is mind boggling when a studio misses that date for horror titles, purely from a marketing viewpoint.
