Smile Oscar best sound and sound effects nominations

I’m more of a keen a listener for technical awards.

I guess will all, have to wait till March 7th until it’s unveiled live!

This years best sound and sound effects editing nominations are

Sound Editing
“Avatar” Christopher Boyes and Gwendolyn Yates Whittle
“The Hurt Locker” Paul N.J. Ottosson
“Inglourious Basterds” Wylie Stateman
“Star Trek” Mark Stoeckinger and Alan Rankin
“Up” Michael Silvers and Tom Myers

Sound Mixing
“Avatar” Christopher Boyes, Gary Summers, Andy Nelson and Tony Johnson
“The Hurt Locker” Paul N.J. Ottosson and Ray Beckett
“Inglourious Basterds” Michael Minkler, Tony Lamberti and Mark Ulano
“Star Trek” Anna Behlmer, Andy Nelson and Peter J. Devlin
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” Greg P. Russell, Gary Summers and Geoffrey Patterson

I have only one of this nominee on Bluray Star Trek and I was quite impressed I think most of us where impressed with the sound mix on this summer blockbuster.

There are few that are out on bluray that I might consider picking up before the ceremony. “Inglourious Basterds” has Michael Minkler and been quite impressed with his past works of achievement, such as Black Hawk Down and Chicago (DVD).

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” now not being a huge Bay fan I guess I could consider it a worth by for Greg P. Russell and former Skywalker Sound (Gary Summers) whom has picked up Oscar several times in the past.

“Up” “The Hurt Locker” and “Avatar” not out on region B and I guess money is riding on “Avatar” to sweep the sound awards which wouldn’t surprise me.

I persoanlly think Terminator Salvation deserved said technical sound awards, and felt Transformers 2 desered a nomination for sound as well as it's visual effects.

Love sound of that blue ray blasting through my room. The movie kind of bombed though. They probably forgot it came out.

The company went bankrupt, which is probably the reason for no nominations. Not sure if it bombed though, it made more money then the new Star Trek.

Star Trek's sound mixing was very good. I am rooting for that to win in this category.

Wow blimey it went into liquidation?
I guess it was terminated then. Okay I made bad joke, not funny.

It must have flown way under the Oscar sound category radar system then?

It’s interesting looking back on the past 10 years or so where most have only single nomination in the sound / sound effects editing category.

Odd couple list LOL where they’ve only received a single nomination and some tend to pull though with an award where others don’t and there seems to be cycle that occurs once in while where it grabs both categories.

I’m trying to get an angle here on which film will take sound and sound effects editing.

As far as I can remember and I have good ear for remember details in film mix.

Star Trek had lots and lots of sound effects going for it. Very little dialogue panning happening in fact there was hard off-screen dialogue to the left front when Nero was called to the bridge.

The rest of the titles I haven’t heard yet.

Okay I got into my time machine and whizzed back quickly to 1997 looking for an Avatar angle here?

SOUND
Air Force One -- Paul Massey, Rick Kline, D. M. Hemphill, Keith A. Wester
Con Air -- Kevin O'Connell, Greg P. Russell, Arthur Rochester
Contact -- Randy Thom, Tom Johnson, Dennis Sands, William B. Kaplan
L.A. Confidential -- Andy Nelson, Anna Behlmer, Kirk Francis
* Titanic -- Gary Rydstrom, Tom Johnson, Gary Summers, Mark Ulano

SOUND EFFECTS EDITING
Face/Off -- Mark P. Stoeckinger, Per Hallberg
The Fifth Element -- Mark Mangini
* Titanic -- Tom Bellfort, Christopher Boyes

Odd couple list

Air Force One
Con Air
L.A. Confidential
The Fifth Element
Face/Off

Now I have all titles ether on laserdisc DVD and none as of yet on Bluray

Air Force One had lots and lots of sound effects pushing it louder
The Fifth Element
Face/Off now I first had preview of this at UCI cinema just outskirts of London and saw at least 4 people get up and walk out on the start of reel 2! IT WAS TOO BLEEPING LOUD! I was aware of the situation the cinema auditorium hardly had any low end bass to support an smooth response it was all top end from the HF front LCR horns! There might have only been a single sub bass speaker behind the screen?

A lot of the Foley effects impact was simply lost. In the home on THX laserdisc it was somewhat different I noted during the open the odd few sidekicks and punches and automatic machinegun fire was felt and the explosions as well.

L.A. Confidential had fairly laidback sound mix with a few occasional now then loud moments it was pushing it in your face.

Con Air just sheer bloody loud and this is typical of produces Jerry Bruckheimer / Don Simpson LOL

The Fifth Element is on the level with now and then mild softer moments

Titanic had a few now and the dialogue panning on and off screen lots and lots and lots of directional clear sound effects and use of split-surrounds and LFE.1 that came in at the right moment rather then forcing it on us, had me going back some 12 14 times to watching it I mean listening to it. It was the best Dolby sound in town at the time.

So I feel Avatar might sweep the sound categories.

That’s a strong possibility we shall see on the BIG NIGHT! By the way are they going to share free live video stream with us since after-all we pay to go the cinema and buy DVD/Bluray.

Just so happens I brought

The Hurt Locker Bluray
Inglourious Bastards Bluray

I’ll re-view Star Trek again along with these new titles and see which ones got strong hold on picking up Oscar.

If Avatar takes all two awards, then it won’t be till around summertime till its out on Bluray.

There is a main Oscar thread, but good luck keeping a discussion going about the technical side in that one.

It is mainly a "this movie is awesome and this one sucked" thread, with your occasional "this actor(tress) sucked and this one was great".

Thumbs up The Hurt Locker 10 out of 10 for sound

Wow, wow, wow 10 out of 10 for The Hurt Locker it was intensively intensified sinking at times grittily pulse rising.

I had to reduce the level of the LFE.1 track down touch during the opening as I had sixth sense this was going to go down low and very dynamic in level.

The use of the sound field voices panned over the LCR and occasionally onto the split-stereo surrounds totally encompassed around listening area. I could almost taste the dryness of the desert openness.

This was an eye opener, on what it takes for bomb disposal troops working in Iraq.

I kinder lost my appetite as some of the scenes was just shocking, the kinder thing you’d see on the news.

One little gripe I have is the dtsHDMA the end credits clearly shows Dolby digital. Optimum Release could at least put two digital tracks for the consumer to chose.

Other than that it was flawless mix. It stands good chance of winner best sound. We shall see on the BIG NIGHT?

One last thing Kathryn Bigelow for best director, wow!

I’ll do few individual frequency spectrumlab waterfalls on The Hurt Locker later in the night as the first explosion was slow and deep other expulsions fast and rapped.

Yeah cheers Diesel

Well everyone else wants to chit chat about actor actress and director and which best film of the year?

I’ve had eye for listening and ear for remembering, LOL I know that doesn’t make any sense.

I look at the direction milliseconds after it directional sound pops up and remember the location stored up in my noodle. My body remembers the feel of the vibration.

Well that’s if for today I’m relaxing with original Star Trek series on DVD now so I’ll get around to the “Inglourious Bastards” tomorrow what to give me nerves and ears a rest.

Some waterfalls of The Hurt Locker chapter 1 time 8m:27s to 9m:35s

I strongly agree. Not only was the sound mixed very well, there were NEW and ORIGINAL sounds, not just the same old rehashed ones tweaked.
