Default the "Why buy Blu-ray's if you can download or use Netflix?" question.

Does anyone else get tired of people asking this question and actually suggesting to stop buying blu rays and to get Netflix or to download etc? Sometimes I think that people don't understand us collectors.

Then a month later: "I can't believe they took [Insert Show Here] off Netflix! I was just about to start the second season! "

For me, it's not so much about being a collector but just having the films I want on hand.

Yep. I'm very selective about what I watch. I don't see many new shows on tv either, usually opting for older reruns that I know I'll enjoy. I don't have too much time to spend trying something new so I tend to go with things I know I'll like instead. I guess I'd have to call it a collection but I don't feel like a collector since they have a much more practical use.
Funny enough, I usually look for reruns on Netflix too. I guess I'm a creature of habit that way.

I tend to not buy things if they are on Netflix, or if I've recently seen it on Netflix. So even though I am a bit of a collector, I also understand that mindset of not wanting to waste money if I'm fully able to watch it on a service I'm already paying for.

Now paying for downloads is something else. I could live with a slightly inferior digital copy if I could own for much cheaper than blu-ray, what I don't get is why anyone would want to pay a premium to own a digital copy.

While I consider myself a collector, I don't really have my library for collecting reasons. I don't trust the digital market and only use it as a bonus area (Codes from physical buys) and a trial area. Physical media is much safer.

Netflix comes in handy for TV shows though. That is my main reason why I still have the service and will continue having it.

Netflix is OK for films not on Blu Ray, but the bitrate is about half that on a blu - plus I collect much easier.

I have Netflix, but they barely have anything I'm interested in watching most times. It would be cool if Netflix actually kept their movies and shows on their list permanently, but they don't even do that. I wouldn't even bother with answering that question if I get asked it. Those people clearly don't know any better.

I have my discs, I can do whatever I want with them.

Even if it means the studios having no control in the matter.

Btw, the streaming quality sucks.

I don't care either way. If its on Netflix or Hulu and I miss out on it, oh well. I can always buy the disc or something if I really, really wanted to see it.

That said, I have the same mentality with the Netflix originals, hence why I absolutely fine with pre-ordering season 1 of "Daredevil", even though its unlikely they would pull an original production.

I don't see the point in buying downloads, may as well go for the Blu-Ray if you're going to own it, much better all round value. Netflix streaming is good as a renting substitute, but granted the selection is thin, especially here in Austarila.

Anyone that asks that question with Netflix as the suggestion is just being harmless, they're just a person that views movies/shows as a passive experience and doesn't really get into them and is just fine with having an extremely limited and volatile selection. Getting mad about it is foolish, they don't mean any harm by it, they think they're being helpful because your outlook on movies is totally alien to them.

People who buy stuff off Itunes or Vudu or whatever are hypothetically more annoying, as there's a tinge of "haha, you waste SO MUCH SPACE, I have this trick for saving so much!!!" but I almost never encounter them.

Most normal people just have cable and netflix and have a massive selection of movies at any given time and can rent new releases in the rare event they want to see something people are talking about that isn't available on cable/netflix. If you don't read about releases of obscure stuff and don't read movie books/magazines that talk about stuff you might not be able to get through your netflix/cable/redbox services, you're almost definitely not going to feel like you're missing anything. Oscar season would be the exception, but we're in the same boat as them then since everything nominated for best picture tends to not have a home media release for months afterwards.

I have never gotten that suggestion with "downloading," do people still download torrents?! I thought it was more limited to super-nerds who want to get versions of things that have no legit release these days.

Netflix movie collection is horrendous. At least the American version. It's only good for tv shows

There are also those of us in parts of the US that still dont have adequate internet connections that support large downloading or streaming. Insufficient bandwidths and data-caps limit that option. So physical media will always be a necessity.

I actually find many (not all) of those who ask the Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu/Redbox/Rental question are far more judgemental than you suggest. If you explain why you prefer physical media their next statement virtually always comes back about how much money you waste on buying something that you only watch (X number) and how there's so many better things to spend the money on (i.e. how much smarter they use their money)

At that point the conversation is over b/c I refuse to argue about how smart they are since they figured out how to spend my money and free time better.

What sort of people are these and why are you talking to them in the first place?

Online forums, family gatherings, workplace conversations, Bluray.com which is one of the reason i changed the way I listed my collection.

I've found having more than 20 Blurays in you possession at any period in time is questionable and owning more than 100 is widely considered a sign of financial insanity and once you get to 400+ then you are a full on OCD/Horder

Eh. I don't bring it up in public unless it's relevant, but I've never had anyone give me any grief about it that wasn't immediately dispelled by something to the effect of "well, it's still less money than you spent on your boat/guitars/gaming computer/stereo equipment" or whatever other pointless hobby they sink thousands of dollars into Only really insecure d-bags or self-righteous people with kids would actually press the issue or seriously try to insult you about it.

I rarely bring it up though often it is brought up by other people who know I collect -- sometimes as a positive, but often in not so nice terms.

Certainly far less common here, I was still surprised at the number of negative reactions it got on the forum over the years and it turned into more of a distraction so I changed the report.

Outside the forum it's rarely ever considered a good thing. 100 silk ties, 6 Mustangs, 70 Leather Purses, 100 China Dolls, 250 Barbies, 50 pair of dress shoes or 60 pair of sneakers, 40+ suits, a dozen cabinets of Fine China, 100 pipes, 10 sets of Golf Clubs, 20 specialty fishing poles, a dozen smart phones. 200 guns are all considered far less ridiculous than a room full of Blurays.

Looks like I am getting closer to the OCD/Horder stereotype.

Best to not care about what others say unless its something nice. In that case best not to let it get to your head.
