Default After Oct 31, who will get a new player?

Can we all throw our old hardware out with the junk? Firmware updates won't add Ethernet ports, memory, ...

I never watch the special features anyway, so the pip feature is just one more thing I won't use. It seems that special features are only important to about 5-10% of the people anyway, so I'd guess most people won't really care about the new features.

If you're Ken Graffeo, special features are the defining characteristic about the next generation of discs! Forget that you can watch a movie in HIGH DEFINITION on your HIGH DEFINITION TV. That isn't a big enough selling point. What do you need memory for on a Blu-ray player? As far as updates, I guess that's up to you whether you want to spend another ~$250 just so you don't have to burn a disc.

Or just buy a PS3.

thats the great thing about the ps3 is that they can continue to do updates much faster than the standalone players can

I assume there has to be something good about the post-October Samsung 2400's, if companies are reduced to the same "Get three movies free" promotion on the pre-mandate models as the HD companies are--
Some of us can smell an emergency clearance when we see one.

(Ah, I can remember when Disney gave their old "Limited Edition" disks away free, and even then couldn't clear them all out of the warehouse...)

I'll buy a new Blu player, but probably wait for Black Friday specials or a slick discount. My current Sony S300 can go on the bedroom TV after that.

I doubt anyone will blink when Oct 31st arrives. PiP and IME have more to do about bragging rights than it does about watching HD movies.

Whats Ken Graffeo going to say about HD-DVD when Blu-ray has PiP and 20GB more disc space to make use of it?

To be able to choose from multiple boxed commentaries from Directors or Sound engineers to FX guys would be nice if you like that sort of thing.

Lets hope however the BDA's implimentation of PiP is better than that of HD-DVD's to get the likes of WB to make the BD version the one to own.

Some how I think they will.

You need another Voting option:

"I have a PS3, and won't need a new player"

I"ll replace my standalone only when I can get another that performs all of the tasks in the BD spec, PiP, BD-Live, decoding of all audio codecs. It should also run just as fast as the PS3 as menus are concerned.

I will update my standalone for my main theatre room.
having a profile 1.1 player is nice, but having that as well as a player that does HDMI 1.3a for me is important. 1.3a adds hdmi audio clock rate control, so ends HDMIs jitter issues once and for all. not essential to everyone, but for me this means the end of needing denon link or i-link etc.

Not too worried about extra content but the missus likes to look at the stuff .

its a nice to have feature for those that havent got on board yet.

the biggest advantage is it will shut up the HDDVD zealots. so cant be bad.

Hmmm, how about....

If AACS got cracked and all studio's opted for BD+?

How about if Ken Graffeo got sacked from Universal for backing HD-DVD?

What if Amir quit MS because most studio's backed AVC over VC-1?

All possible, lol. It's all a question of which one is going to happen first.
