QUANTUM OF SOLACE. I've read fans likening Craig's Bond to Jason Voorhees in this film, but it's a compelling look at this new Bond driven by rage and grief over the death of the woman he both loved and yet felt betrayed him. Those conflicting feelings - in a man not used to dealing with his own emotions - are at the heart of this criminally underrated 007 thriller. As ever, Bond has a job to do, but there's a thirst for revenge that feels like the real driving force here...and Craig proves what a good actor he is in expressing the underlying pain beneath the stoicism.
This is a fast and mean entry in the series, and it's as beautifully shot and stylish as one would want in a Bond film. Watching QUANTUM directly after CASINO ROYALE helps to give it the emotional resonance it needs. I thought this was a terrific and woefully underappreciated film when I saw it in 2008, but it does look like it's getting the favorable reappraisal from many it so richly deserves...even if I believe the overrated SKYFALL is going to take this round. |

QOS has a great opening scene; I like most of the first act, primarily the parts that include Jesper Christensen as Mr. White, since he's the only antagonist in the film that seems remotely dangerous.
Then, as soon as Camille (Olga Kurylenko) is introduced, the writers seem to completely forget that this film was sold as a direct sequel - and response - to Casino Royale, because Camille essentially becomes the protagonist, while Bond becomes a supporting character. It's Camille that has a past and an agenda with the villain, a completely toothless Matthieu Almeric. Camille's lust for revenge is the only thing keeping the film alive (and the audience awake), because the plot about hoarding water (!) is so dull and underdeveloped that no one really cares. Not even Bond. I believe this is the only 007 film, where the villain dies off screen... from thirst. That's how dull his character is. Skyfall is Craig's next best Bond film, the storyline and action set pieces are much better executed here. Roger Deakins lenses the film and we get a solid and emotional third act. What I don't like so much, is how busy the film gets with reintroducing a lot of Bond tropes from the Moore and Connery years. I preferred the Craig era films to find their own unique voice, from start to finish. Skyfall wins easily. |

I'm not a huge fan of either film, but I give the edge to Skyfall even though I think it's a tad overrated, just because I felt that QoS was a bit undercooked and I didn't like the quick-cutting, Bourne style editing.

As much as i think skyfall is a good movie i know its totally overrated. For me QOS is more dark, more indie and campy and i like it. I like QOS bond girl so my vote is for Quantum of Solace, the most underrated movie of the entire franchise...

Both director Marc Forster and Craig have acknowledged, that the QOS script was problematic due to them only having the first finished draft to work with during shooting, because of a writer's strike at the time. As a result, bits and pieces of the film and dialogue in the finished product was improvised by Craig himself, which he and the director were allowed to do without breaking guild rules.

I've been meaning to revisit all the Craig films before No Time To Die, and now I have several more months to do so. I may have to give Quantum a reappraisal, but my initial impression was that it was not only dull, but nearly incomprehensibly edited in some scenes. Particularly, I remember watching the pre-credits car chase and Mr. White's escape/chase through the streets in slow-motion once I got the Blu-ray; it was the only way I could understand what the hell was going on. I did like some things (the girl covered in oil as an homage to Goldfinger), but all in all I remember it as a disappointing follow-up to Casino Royale. I seldom rewatch it for pleasure, more out of duty as a Bond-fan.
Skyfall is not without its own problems, but you don't really think about them until the exciting ride is all over. (I would really like to know how the Aston-Martin acquired by Craig-Bond in CR came to be equipped with the gadgets from Goldfinger, which took place in a different cinematic reality. I know, it's just another case of the producers not giving a shit about continuity. What, they expect me to believe that Q Branch would trick out Bond's private classic car with period gadgets, and then just put it into storage? Including the car as a wink toward cinematic history, fine; filling it with gadgets, DUMB!)) Skyfall for me. |
