Spain [Rec]2

So, from the success of the first film, and the obvious increase of horror films from Spain (remember the Japanese Horror film wave of the 90's?), [Rec]2 is obviously a given. I remember watching the first installment at the cinemas and it was epic. Nothing like watching a horror film at a late screening with a bunch of other people.

Anyway, on a more personal plug, there's a contest in New Zealand (where I live) about who can make the most buzz about the film. We made a short film and we would love to have your opinions, comments and ratings of it on YouTube. The prize, NZ$5000, that's about US$4K? Imagine the Criterions that we can get for that!

Check it out if you're keen.

It was pretty good!
Kinda like a cross between cloverfield (w/the home movie footage cutting in and out) meets [Rec]! Good luck!

In real life? Yeah I thought they were all believable.. It has to be the most INTENSE movie I have seen - maybe ever!

I usually find ghost movies scarier, but this was terrifying

I saw this movie a couple of months ago and I was dissapointed. I loved the first one and I thought they did a wonderful job at the beginning of the second one, finding a way to continue the story. But the twist presented half way to the movie just didn't work for me. What did you guys think about it?

SPOILERS AHEAD...

+++

What is the twist you are talking about? The introduction of the second camera, or the return of Angela Vidal?

I was very pleasantly surprised by this movie. I think the original REC was always meant as an experiment in form. Remember how the origin of the zombie infection was hardly explained? It was as if the directors were saying: "Just pick any origin story from whatever zombie movie you like and copy and paste into our movie. We're not going to waste screen time on that. Not what our movie is about"

What it was about, of course, is the idea of having the camera that films the movie, be a character in the movie.

Now, a sequel has to abide by a form of it's own. For starters, it has to up the ante somehow. Usually this means more Aliens, or more killings...
Also, it has to tie into the universe of the original movie. Typically this is done by having the killer return (e.g. Freddy) or having the victim return (e.g. Sydney Prescott).

So if the original idea is to have an in-movie camera, what better way to design a sequel than to have two? I thought it was a brilliant idea.
And the return of Angela Vidal nicely hooks the sequel up with the original. I tell you, when she first appears I was reminded of a young Sigourney Weaver, except that she was carrying a camera instead of a pulse rifle, and she looked scared shitless instead of brave. But that is just the character of Angela Vidal for you...

Finally, Rec 2 also paves the way for a 3rd and final installment. For if the idea of the sequel is to have 2 camera's, than surely in Rec 3 there must be many. Maybe it can be about people posting YouTube videos as the infection spreads across Spain. And soon, the passive watchers become part of the story they are watching, as the zombies reach their neighborhood, or something.

If they try to make a third I'll be sure to check it out...

Have you checked your local video store? I actually just bought REC yesterday at my local Hollywood Video. They are going out of business and are selling everything in the inventory. I'd imagine REC should be at most of these other video stores, and $7 was a steal in my book. I am very excited for the sequel, this movie was crazy and got me good a few times.
