Default Does the PS3 run emulators?

Is it possible for the PS3 to run MAME (an arcade emulator) with the downloaded games?

No. At least not yet. Sony will never officially support an emulator, and the chances of custom firmware happening on PS3 are pretty slim (haha, I'm punny... and yes, I know about the Jailbreak guy and his PS3 exploits from a week or two back).

The PS3 has been hacked by the guy that hacked the iPhone. But nothing firm is up with emulators yet.

not only is the nothing firm....there is nothing with the ps3 to realy mention. the kid was able to run some unsigned code. it is a long way from being hacked. he has done the beginning phases......so something like an emulator won't be for ages.

have u looked into yellowdog linux on ps3 or something to that effect?

Wouldn't it make more sense to just use a NES or SNES? ...

??

Or get an old PC and run all the emulators with that. I would. I have in the past but these days I don't make a lot of time for gaming so whatever time I give it I would rather play actual PS3 games that I have.

Yeah I have them for the PC...It'd just be easier to have them on the PS3. I can hook up my monitor to my laptop, but I can't close my laptop lid and still run them. Even if I set my power options to "do nothing" when I close the lid.

Just a quirk of mine, I wanna be able to shut the laptop while running them so I don't have to have two screens going. lol

As long as it's not a Slim, there's a bootable MAME for the PS3, runs on top of linux.

http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=12314

I haven't tried it, but you shouldn't need to actually install linux. All you need to do is install OtherOS (aka bootloader) via the XMB, and when you select "Start OtherOS" from the XMB, it'll boot the custom distro on the disc or thumbdrive. Yes, this is legit, not a hack.

Did you guys know that old PC games (386 and slower) run great on the PS3 via Dosbox? Yes, there's emulators for SNES, NES, Genesis, Amiga, GBA, and more. Most are a bit buggy, but it's because apparently no one's using them.

Can you project a PSP through the PS3 onto the TV? If so, you can do that, but I don't really know how it works.

I'd be happy if I could play some of my Japanese PS2 and/or PSX games.

There was actually a NES emulator that worked via USB on an older patch. Worked flawlessly except that there was no sound.

Sony's next PS3 update prevented that means, and that is the last I've heard of emulators on the PS3.

Apparently in addition to no sound, you couldn't hit multiple directions or buttons at once, limitation of the blu-ray java libraries it was using. They never got around to making a work around for the problem.

You guys are killing me here.

Seriously though, all this renewed interest in homebrew has me tempted to start up linux on my PS3 again and see what's possible.

unlike on the Wii, which runs a lot of emulators via the unofficial homebrew channel.
Shame the PS3 can't really embrace them. My Amiga died years ago, and i'd love to be able to play the games on the PS3

No, but you can plug a PSP directly into a TV, if you have a PSP with TV output (all but the original fat models).

Not sure what you mean by the PS3 not embracing emulators, are you talking about linux being removed from the Slim? All the emulators I listed should run fine on the PS3 with linux, no need to void any warranties. I just haven't tested them personally. Here's a link to an Amiga emulator; there's even some test software you can run if you can't get the kickstart ROM off your old machine.
