Default Kevin Smith is too fat to fly

Quote:
Kevin Smith was thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight yesterday for being a "safety risk" -- a polite way of saying he was deemed too fat to fly.

Smith was flying from Oakland to Burbank and was, according to his own tweets, already seated and ready to go when a Southwest attendant named Suzanne "told me Captain Leysath deemed me a 'safety risk.'"

He flew into Oakland on a SW flight, and tweeted later (along with the photo on the right) that he eventually flew out on one as well.

Smith also received a $100 voucher for his trouble and a few apologetic tweets from SWA, but based on the number of four-letter words used on Smith's Twitter page ... we don't think the apology was accepted.

Mr. Smith originally purchased two Southwest seats on a flight from Oakland to Burbank – as he's been known to do when traveling on Southwest. He decided to change his plans and board an earlier flight to Burbank, which technically means flying standby. As you may know, airlines are not able to clear standby passengers until all Customers are boarded. When the time came to board Mr. Smith, we had only a single seat available for him to occupy.

I had no idea he was the director of "Cop Out" until I saw his Twitter page.

He'd lost a ton of weight recently. So I'm kinda surprised by this. Unless he packed it back on.

Maybe the pilot just didn't like Dogma or something and decided to use the "Fat Clause" to boot him.

I still find the idea of charging someone two tickets because of being overweight are both demeaning and disturbing as well.

When I saw him last year on a talk show, I couldn't believe how HUGE he'd gotten. He told a story on that show about being so fat he actually broke a toilet while sitting on it. Yeah buddy, time to lose about 150lbs.

I'd like to hear your thoughts after spending 2 hours on a flight squished next to a 400+ pound guy who's leg, arm, chest and belly flab is pressed up against you and sweating. Trust me, it's not pleasant.

I fly nearly every week, and feel very strongly that if you can't keep all parts of your body confined to the area between your arm rests, you need to purchase two tickets. I should not have to sacrifice my comfort (what little there is when I have to fly SW or coach) just so some 'large' individual does not get their feelings hurt by being required to purchase two seats.

I have had the experience by the way and for 14 hours flight before. Its really unpleasant. But also consider this: Overweight people should be accommodated as well. Wider seats for example wouldn't be such a bad idea (also it also means less passengers).

Or reserve few seats for the overweights and charge them for one ticket instead of two.

Anyways, trust me I know how annoying it is.

I had that happen with me on my flight from Honolulu to St. Paul. Big man all up on me with his fat shoulders molesting me. Not fun. Especially when you are trying to watch a movie on my laptop. I was watching Ponyo and the guy was watching along too.

But Southwest's policy has less to do about the comfort of their customers, and more to do with fuel costs. It is merely couched in the guise of preventing neighboring passengers any discomfort. You can bet the policy was implemented because of fuel costs. Every single pound that goes up in the air costs an airline extra money. If it was up to the airline, the only passengers that could board the plane would be 100-pound women who fly naked with no luggage.

Wider seats = less seat total on plane = higher ticket prices. it'll never happen.
But I see both sides of the coin. All people deserve the same service. But then again, I'm not gonna pay $1,000 bucks for coach to sit next to someone that spills out over the seat and make it impossible for me to use the bathroom or whatever.

If you get kicked off of a plane because of your weight then thats a pretty strong hint that you need to lose some.

Did his shoulders tell you don't fight it?

Well in that interview I mentioned earlier, He looked like he'd probably gained 80lbs since Clerks II, he was wearing his GIANT overcoat and jean shorts and was sweating the entire time, while just talking and he was smashed into the guest chair pouring over the sides.
