My brother just bought the Onkyo 605 model, 7.1 set up. His budget is between 400-500. Does anyone recoment a whole set up for this amount like....
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/KEF-H...oductDetail.do or should he get 2 floor speakers for 500 and build around that? |

at 400 - 500, i'd prob go two very good bookshelfs. then, in a year or two, get two towers or bigger bookshelfs along with a center, move the old fronts to the back and then you have a full 5.1 stage.

About four years ago I bought a set of five Onkyo speakers and a subwoofer from Circuit City for pretty cheap ($200?). I got them for about the same price as the Pioneer receiver I bought at the same time. It was Thanksgiving and they were having a sale or something. While they were not very expensive, they are still going strong today and I could tell an AMAZING difference when I hooked them up to my new 605. I recently got the 605 as well, so I needed two more surround speakers. I purchased two Pioneer S-HF21-LRs or something like that for $40 (purchased it online then picked up at a store to save $10, since I pass a CC on the way home from work). They have worked out great. They are just surround speakers and you can't hear the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 in a small space anyway. Maybe one day when I have a HUGE living room I will invest more money in the speakers, but for my apartment, they are more than enough. Most of what I see currently available are speakers WITH receivers, so it may be harder to find just speaker sets these days. I would check with Best Buy and Circuit City first. You may have to order it online and have it delivered. I have had better luck with that than trying to find them in the stores. Good luck.

Kefs are nice at $499; and there seems to be a coupon code as well for another $50 off. Not bad. The Kefs come with the wall mounts as well that a savings of another $200 depending on the mounts. If your budget is a bit higher I would suggest Boston Acoustics. A whole top of the line set and run you about $2000 or so. Bose, while very main stream, do have a good sound; there are between $600 - $1200. Brand names only go so far, it really comes down to your ear. I would also invest in good speaker wire as well. Good Luck and have fun.

I have the same amp. Which first of all, is an excellent piece of hardware.
I didnt have all that much money left over, so I ended up going with a factory refurbished set of Infinity TSS-750's. They come with a great sub and arent too bad overall. You can get them on ebay for about 250 shipped, and do what I did - replace the front left and the front right with good bookshelf speakers (to fatten the midrange). The sound is much more impressive than the price would seem to dictate. Oh, and I bought them from Harmon Audio, Infinity's mother company. They came well packaged and without a scratch! This setup gets you going and you can upgrade it piece by piece when you are able to (if you need to for that matter). Best of luck! |

Speakers, more than any other audio component, are purely a reflection of personal preference. Find a local store with a listening room, and go listen to which ones sound best to you. Be wary because some underhanded shops will connect lower end speakers out of phase to try to upsell you to the higher end models.
Take your own source CD... personally, I like to take 1812. Listen to the sound and the dynamic range to make your decision. Its important that the speakers sound good not only at high levels, but also at very low levels as well. |
